On Friday, a buddy send me four pipes to restore for him. I didn't have much going on this weekend, so I dove in.
These pipes were smoked hard and put away wet!

First up was this giant Charatan 44. This thing is massive, weighing in at 100 grams!

Next up was this beautiful and large Savinelli Autograph. I was very impressed with how well this one was made and might have to keep any eye out for an Autograph for my rack.

This one was stamped "Sherlock" and Italian. It has a very nice golden finish with facets.

This last one was just stamped "Made in London England" but it appears to me to have some Charatan DNA in it. This one is also close to 100 grams, a massive hunk of blasted briar. I had to restain this one, as the clean up lightened it in several spots. I decided that the bowl top was so beat up, it would look better polished and I'm pleased with how that turned out.

And here is the quartet of finished pipes:

WELL DONE !!! I can't believe you have not been introduced to Autographs till now ! I've got one and they have to be some of the nicest pipes made ! Get one :p

Fantastic work Al. Very impressive. Your buddy is going to be very pleased!!

Nice work. I agree that the no name one appears to have some Charatan in in it.

For Perspex stems I've had success leaving an iso-alcohol soaked cleaner stuck in it for a while. It gets a lot of the tar. I've never had one that dirty, however, so take it FWIW.

Great job riff raff! Why buy them new, when you have the ability to make them look that good?

Fine jobs all around.

That last beast looked like it has some GBD blood in it...the angle of the strummel and the stem do look Charatan, I'll give you that. But the size and surface look more GBD. Maybe it's a hybrid?

Great job. - you have a talent sir!

Regards

This gentleman did have several GBD's (I have two from this estate) I just have never seen an GBD that is this huge. I have two "Colossus" pipes but this dwarfs them.

You sir have done a top notch job. They look great. Now to enjoy your labors. I always enjoyed bringing a old but enjoyed pipe back to Her luster, and enjoying her myself.

Well, these all shipped back to my buddy in Ohio. He's having a tough week, so I hope opening the box and seeing them shiny again will put a smile on his face.

Yeah...but he said in the first post that he was doing it for a friend. So other than basking in the awe of fellow BoB bros here and enjoying the satisfied glow of a job well done...so, yeah, that's gonna be the source of the enjoyment.

Very nice work. Do you do restores for other people? I sometimes see a pipe for sale that needs some work. I pass as I don't know how to do it. Make a little tobacco fund money on the side.

WOW! Those are some great before/afters!!! You did an amazing job sir. Please let us know your process!!! What do you do for the stems? How do you get char off the top of the bowl? What do you buff the bowl with?

Thanks Zach. I go into greater detail on my entries on Steven Laug's blog, "Reborn Pipes".

Here is a list of my submissions, which goes thru materials/processes.
