I just joined and I'm looking to get started. With no good/any pipe shops on Long Island I've been searching the internet but I'm still confused about what a good starter pipe would be (probably $20 to $50 say) and the best place to pick one up. Any input is much appreciated.

Hey, finsup. Welcome aboard.
I see the advice flood has already started. Browse these forums a bit and you'll find several similar threads. There seem to be a lot of new guys taking the pipe lately, and I think that's great. I'm sure you'll get more suggestions than you know what to do with. Keep two things in mind. One: there's nothing wrong with cobs. (Think MacArthur, not Popeye.) Two: your 20-50 dollar price range will be a lot closer to the $50 end of the scale for a decent briar, unless you want to buy estate. (used) Also, nothing wrong with that.
Good luck and have fun.

Good advice already given...the name Missouri Meerschaum should be in your new vocabulary already!

Welcome to BoB and read, read, read!!

Welcome to the board, lots of great people here to share your hobby with.

Welcome to the forum! It's great to have you here. Like others have said, cobs are a great way to get started. I think trying quality tobaccos holds priority over trying "quality" pipes...

Dat's for true.
Good tobacco in a modest pipe is always
better than crappy tobacco in a work of art.

Good choice, and welcome. The "what pipe" part is relatively simple, compared to "what tobacco," and "how to smoke it." The rest of that is a matter of personal choice, stemming from a handful of helpful hints. 8)

You found the right place.
