I bought a MM Diplomat yesterday and had trouble finding one that did not have alot of hard milky goop in the bottom of the bowls. I finaly found one that had just a small dolp that I can carefully remove with a pocket knife.

What is that stuff?? It was different from the yellowish stuff they put on the outsides to give it a smooth finish. I assume the stuff inside was glue used to anchor the stem into the bowl.

Whatever it is I certainly do not want to be smoking it! Has anyone else come across this or was it just a bad batch that the B&M shop was unfortunate to get. I have several other MM's and have never seen this in them. Hopefully thier quality control is not slipping...

I've bought all of my MMs sight unseen from Mars Cigars, none of them had any goop in the bottom. I assume it's a fixative to shore up the stem to the bowl, as they're usually jutting quite deep into the bottom of the bowl. Maybe it was a trainee's batch.

I believe the stuff on the outside is the special Plaster of Paris mix they use to seal the outside--I don't think they use that stuff to glue in the stem, either.

I was just wondering why it seems like nobody ever buys them direct from Missouri Meerschaum. I always buy mine straight from them and I receive such great personal service. The people there are really wonderful.
Someone here on BoB suggested Mars Cigars originally, and their prices are excellent. Plus, buying direct is awesome, but I want to see how middlemen treat me, as I often combine my order with other tobacco and accessories to test them out. It's a little cheaper to ship that way, too. I'm not opposed to buying direct.

This really doesn't have anything to do with the glue. Which by the way I have been lucky enough to not have had in any of my MMs, but I was just wondering why it seems like nobody ever buys them direct from Missouri Meerschaum. As an aside, does anyone have one of their Aristocobs? I've got one in really nice condition. I don't smoke it, to me it's more of a collector's rarity.
While I have never been opposed to ordering directly from MM before, I will not be doing it now out of fear that I might get a "glue" pipe.

I would write them a note asking them what might be wrong. I've heard they're awesome folk over there. 8)

I don't have one, I think it's a great concept though. If the bowl inserts were available I think a lot more people would give it a try instead of putting them on display. How about cob bowls for Falcons or Kirstens,,,,

The glue is used to secure the shank in the bowl, and is safe to use, and to smoke. After less than a dozen smokes, the inner shank begins to burn away, and any remaining glue will mix with the burnt inner shank and adds to the strenght of the bottom of the pipe.

I do buy my natural Spools and some others directly from MM, But I buy my Prides by the dozen or 18 pipes at a time from Mars. Mars not only has lower prices, but gives a 10% discount on lots of a dozen or more of the same model.

Prices are higher direct from MM, which I guess is the reason most don't buy direct. Expect they are protecting their vendors. I don't think MM has a Quality Control dept. I have gotten them smeared with glue, the shank turned sideways etc. That said, you gets what you pays for.

It's hard to imagine a glue that is ok to smoke. It still makes me uncomfortable.

You don't seriously think they could or would use toxic glue and stay in business, do you? How else would you suggest that they assemble their pipes?
