I did a search here on Burley to see what so many like about it and why I HATE it so much.
God awful stuff that ruins a good VA with a tongue bite that is enough to sear the tip of
your tongue off for days. I don't understand why even the package says No Bite. I've tried it in cobs,
briars and meers with no difference. Has everyone lost the feeling and taste buds of their tongue or
am I doing something wrong?
Until I found Escudo I though all pipe tobacco was this way, just NASTY! You all can have the burley and I'll
just keep the straight and NO burley blend VA's to myself.

Could be your body chemistry.

While I have no problems with Burleys, Monbla - who's been smoking a pipe for over 40-years - doesn't get along with most Burleys either. From what I've seen it goes beyond preferences and likes/dislikes.

Not saying there is something wrong with you or your taste buds, just saying that sometimes these things just don't agree with everyone. Kinda like how some people can drink lots of hard liquor for years on end and die of old age, while others do the exact same thing for only a couple of years and develop cirrhosis of the Liver...

Mouth chemistry. When I first started out I could smoke virginias but burley gave me fits. Dry mouth, harsh, almost caustic tasting, bit me. Eventually my mouth chemistry changed and I started picking up a lot of flavor and not having negative reactions to burley. Incidentally, this was about the same time that virginias started tasting flat and ashy to me. I now smoke much more burley than straight virginia, and I no longer enjoy perique at all.

The latest twist, after a few years of simply not liking latakia at all, I can now again enjoy it (not the big lat bombs, but in well balanced low to moderate latakia blends).

We just change.

Thanks Rob, that explains a lot and confirms others. Like I had mentioned in another post
I have some GLP Union Square that no matter how or what I smoke it in, it tastes like dry dirt.
Reckon I'm just a straight VA man.

Puff, I understand the chemistry thing but, my taste buds have been the same much of my 59 years and if
they start changing on me now that's really going to screw me up. :lol!: I hate change, so lets hope they
just stay the same for a little while longer.

I definately concur with your assesment of US. But as our resident 'bac expert Yak has told us it's THE ONLY true Va blend. ALL the rest have Burley in 'em!

Well it is, you know. :)

(Two moved in with some friends they took a shine to, relieving the overcrowding a bit).

Of course. You say so

If some politician you don't like said that two plus two was four . . .

I'm the same way. Burley dominant blends seem to obliterate my tongue. I really like the flavour of quality burley I just can't handle in in large amounts. I chalk it up to body chemistry.

Storm Front was a little different for me. It still bit, but was nowhere near as caustic if I took my time. It might also be because I've smoked it exclusively out of cobs. I may try some in a briar soon.

Burley makes me feel yuck :(

I assume it is Vitamin N poisoning.

I tried some carter hall a while back, didn't give me any bite and the flavour was okay, bit bland but okay, the nicotine content was pathetic though, Burley blends are supposed to be Lady-N bombshells, boring boring boring boring boring boring boring, did I mention I found it boring.

As a major fan of Solani's Aged Burley Flake, I feel sorry for you brothers. :(

But that's how it goes. Different chemistries and all that.

Hmmmm. This topic makes me think that as yucky as it sounds, there might actually be something to that bird's nest soup...

Jack Spratt could eat no fat.
His wife could eat no lean.
And so, betwixt them both, you see,
They licked the platter clean.
