I own 31 pipes all of them baskets and grabows and estates .
Most of which are as old as me nothing real nice or expensive.
So my question it I reamed them all a year ago and smoke them
In rotation. and some of the ones that I have had the longest
Just burn the heck out of me each has had 10 half bowls smoked to
The bottom some I put honey in some of them to help with cake.
My tobacco is cornucopia from tinder box it is getting a bit dry.
It is the mix that they spill .so what makes a pipe so hot to smoke?

An overly dry tobacco will burn very quickly which lends to the pipe heating up very quickly, this isn't a game ender, you can try slowing your cadence and drawing a little shallower when you puff.

Thin walled pipes heat up real fast no matter what tobacco is in the chamber, but that doesn't mean a thick walled pipe wont heat up just as quickly if your cadence is too rapid and/or you draw too deeply and too frequently.

Nothing wrong with basket pipes chap, used to own a fair few myself and with some proper handling there were superb smokers.

You also might want to try some tobacco other then floor sweepings.
If your tobacco is drying out put it up in mason jars, these will keep them
like the day you bought them as far as moisture level goes.

As Kirk mentioned, very dry tobacco can tend to burn hot. Maybe remoisturize what you have and see if that helps. Just put the tobacco in a tupperware or bowl and drape a moist paper towel over it. It should be fairly moist within 24 hours.

Also, if you really puff hard, it will heat up pretty quickly, Maybe take smaller puffs and see if that helps. Keeping the temperature down takes practice, but really pays off both in taste and avoiding tongue bite. I try to smoke with as little smoke as possible coming out.That naturally keeps me from really hauling on the pipe. That area where it feels like its hardly lit is where I find the most nuance in flavors.

I think what everyone is telling you is you're probably puffing harder trying to get some taste which leads to a hotter pipe because the tobacco is burning faster. The reason you're having to puff so hard for the taste is that the tobacco has lost a good bit of flavor because it's too dry. Rehydrate your tobacco and slow down the puffing.
