Just plain idiotic. No offense to anyone but even 1/20th of that on a pipe is too much for one to me.

Let me see, NO!!!

Although the straight grains are gorgeous...

WHAT? None of you trillion pound 'bac hoarders can't pony up a mere $20k for an "artison" pipe to smoke it in ?

Geez. Saw another thread like this somewhere else with the same pipe. *sigh*

Some of Nordh's work has sold for prices like this and some have sold for less. Some have sold for more. What people are buying with his work now is a piece of pipe making history, work that raised the bar on pipe making at large and is no longer being created because the maker is unfortunately dead. That's how the art market tends to work.

In this case, we're not talking about some estate pipe that Uncle Bob made. All things are not equal. The price on this pipe is not exorbitant given the history, availability, and level of perfection the artist pursued. It's just not affordable for most of us.

Yes, to all of this!
If you can get your head around the idea that different levels of appreciation exist,
and that some view pipes as art, then your incredulousness will diminish.
Fender guitars from the 1950's are easily in this price range, and they were not even crafted by skilled luthiers, but by factory employees who could work a table saw and a sander.
Can you play "Smoke on the water" on one? Yes.
Can you play "Smoke on the water" on a $199 guitar from Korea? Yes.
But different levels of appreciation exist.
Supply and demand takes care of the rest.
It's why all of us who appreciate a Picasso, or Norman Rockwell, don't have an original
hanging over the mantle...

I want a pre cbs strat

an original rothko

and a Bo Nordh pipe

yes, that would be a good day

I read somewhere that pipe collecting has become the rage in China, and that some well to do Chinese businessmen are shelling out these exorbitant prices right now, for some of the highly collectable artisan pipes. I also read recently, that one collectible pipe went for $30,000.

The assumption is that, when and if the Chinese lose interest in pipe collecting, and move on to some other hobby, you may see prices drop back down to more traditional levels.
