Hi all! I took up pipe smoking a few months ago and have been bitten by a serious case of PAD and TAD - it's really become quite a serious affliction. These diseases have manifested in a fondness for Italian pipes, Syrian Latakia and flakes of all sorts.

Hoping you'll let me live vicariously through you so I don't feel compelled to buy every pipe and tin of tobacco I set eyes on. Though, come to think of it, hanging out here may only make it worse - oh well, at least I'll be in good company!

Welcome to the forum! It's great to have you here

PAD/TAD seems to only be exacerbated by this group lol but at least you'll have lots of fine tobacco and some fine pipes in which to smoke it

Welcome, dont let the PAD hit you to hard, it always seems that when you think you have enough pipes you always seem to find another one that YOU MUST HAVE :lol!:

Welcome! Yes, we are TAD and even PAD enablers. I hope you enjoy your time here

Welcome! Whatever you do, don't search the word "Cellar" on this forum :D

Due to health reasons I must go. I envy you just beginning this fascinating journey. PAD and TAD are often the butt of jokes here, but I think you have it right that the boards can be a tremendous inducement toward fostering both, as as you know you will read about every old and new tobacco that comes along; you will hear about all those fabled artisans producing the most eye-pleasing and well-engineered pipes costing hundreds to thousands of dollars; and you're going to want some of them.

And that's fine. Buy some. Buy don't buy them all. Be acutely aware of your financial responsibilities to those about whom you care and to yourself. Make sure to pay them and yourself first. With what money can be reasonably spent, indulge this habit. Remember that it can be enjoyed with a single great tin of tobacco and a modest pipe.

My very best to you, sir; and if my words have aroused the spirit of rebellion, then discount them and this old man:).

Thank you all for the warm welcomes!

One of the things driving the TAD was the (un)fortunate gift of several samples of beautiful, aged, flake tobaccos covered in delicate, little sugar crystals. I'm now operating on a "one for me, one (or more) for the cellar" plan in hopes of cracking a tin a few years from now to experience the fruits of my foresight and patience.

Thank you for the kind words and wisdom. On the contrary, I've never been one to turn down sage advise. My job allows an indulgence here and there and my wife is always there to make sure I don't over-indulge (or at least to make sure that our hobbies and passions are equitably indulged.) My very best to you as well - I wish you a long, healthy and prosperous retirement from the briar.

Enjoy the adventure, and find a comfortable, quiet place to sit and contemplate the world as you peacefully puff away.
I'm fortunate enough to have a quiet rooftop patio with a comfortable couch where I can see the city, but not hear it. A pipe, a good cup of coffee and the Times in the morning and a pipe with a glass of bourbon in the evening, both with the dog curled up beside me - not bad bookends to the day and a great way to both prepare for and recover from the clients that keep the bills paid and the cellar stocked.

Once again, thanks to all for the gracious welcome. I'm sure we'll cross paths again soon.

Cheers,
Tom

Welcome Tom! I highly recommend the NYC Pipe Club, which meets monthly at Florios in Little Italy (Grand Street). A fine group of fellows I've had the pleasure of meeting on several occasions. There is always plenty of tobacco samples floating around and pipes for sale by members. They have dinner before the meeting, than abscond to the upstairs smoking lounge. I wish that I didn't live so far away.

I spent a lot of time smoking cigars, drinking scotch and playing with expensive knives at Florios in 2008-2009. My office-mate and I would cut out for a late lunch on Fridays, head to Florios and would stumble out at around four in the morning after we knew for certain that we'd finished every last drop of Balvenie in the entire place. I've still got the scars to prove that handling custom knives and drinking are two hobbies that should not intersect. I'm not sure if the story gets told anymore now that Larry's left us (RIP), but my friend Dylan brought in about 12 people for his birthday, had one drink, and ended up falling asleep in that ugly brown bathtub in the bathroom.

I'll definitely check out NYPC and try and make the next meeting.

Welcome, from another Brooklyn boy! This is a great place to encourage your vice--um--"hobby." Lots of great people here. Enjoy!

Welcome!! It is indeed easy to let TAD and PAD get out of control I know this first hand lol!!
