Hello BoB community,

I am a new piper from Montreal, QC. I am very excited to begin my journey into pipe tobacco. I have been given a few pipes from my girlfriend's grandfather. 2 of them in good condition (an old Peterson System and a Dunhill), and the rest in pretty beat up shape. I guess my first question to the community would be if anyone has any good resources for heavy restauration. I'm talking tooth holes on the bit and an oxidized shank. In any case, I will likely buy a few new pipes for myself (i'm guessing everyone can relate to the feeling of buying something for yourself for the first time). Any advice on a first pipe? I have read up already on pipes in general so I know the basics, but if anyone has some personal experience that would always be appreciated.

Best regards and hello to everyone!

Greetings, Brother! Welcome to BoB. You might want to check over in the DIY section for some threads that might answer your questions. Several members also restore pipes, and we have lots of makers.

Friar, as far as what to buy for your first new pipe you will find widely varying views on this. And it's all pretty subjective at the end of the day.

Much of it depends on your own personal preferences, your budget, and a host of other factors too numerous to list.

Perhaps the one constant in all of this is to acquire a few MM cobs, as they are inexpensive, smoke incredibly well for any and all 'baccys, and are always available.

You'd do well to get a few of them while you ponder your next briar move. And of course, read some of the posts on the relevant forums such as PAD, the Pipe forum, and so on. You'll get a sense of these after a while and can then make your own personal decisions.

Cheers,

Welcome to the BoB. Glad to have you on board. The advice about starting with corn cob pipes is right on. You'll find it's a wise move if you're looking to get the most bang for your bucks. :)

Sois le bienvenu dans la fraternité, Friarbriar!

For your estate pipes' restoration, contact Mike Myers of Walker Pipe Repair. He took care of one of my new pipes (he replaced the stem which I broke) and he is just great:

As for a first pipe, are you looking to buy local, or online?
