Howdy, all.

I'm just some idiosyncratic, moody and moderately tasteful, lightly trashy fellow from Reno.

Likely I'll let time and communication dictate who you think I am, or you'd envision me as, but I'm a fun conversationalist, rife with questions about everything around me, filled with information I sometimes wish I didn't have, and enjoy the company of select individuals.

Yeah, I smoke a pipe. I suppose that's important. I started smoking one in high school, which naturally, made me the envy of my classmates. Actually, among other things, it usually was grounds for a proper arse-whoopin'. That's life in adolescent weirdsville.

Recently got back into my pipe, as cost-versus-income made it an achievable luxury. Hooray! I've found my tastes are quite different. I've been quite taken to pairing rye whiskies and some scotch with the pipe smoke, so I'm pretty much starting from scratch.

I still have my Dr. Grabow Lark from high school, a terrible little smoking device, but it looked neat. I was working at an old folks home back then, and it was given to me practically on the deathbed of some creepy old soul named Lloyd. He apparently found it important that I not only take his old pipe, but to use it. Respecting my elders and shirking off my duties as a self-conscious teen, so it went.

Nowadays I'm running around with a second-hand thrift store Danish pipe with no name, a nicely hand-carved bowl, vulcanite (I think) stem and a lovely cake. I have a pretty li'l Nording sitter on layaway at the local Tinder box. Just suited my fancy, and I think giving the ol' Danish a break once in a while is a good idea. I found this blog searching about how one would carve their own pipe--which I intend to embark upon relatively soon. Debark? *sigh*

Anyway, I play/repair/collect/experiment with old synthesizers, I like crappy old rifles and other various weapons, Vespa and Bajaj scooters, circuit bending horrid toys, making music, training in Aikido and writing for my local blog. I work in the mining industry as a geotech and consultant, enjoy gardening, cooking and B-rate films.

Look forward to chatting with you all, as you seem like a nice bunch.

Cheers!

Welcome

So what kind of old synths do you "experiment" with? I'm a sucker for dirty, squealing, fuzzy synths!

Mostly cheap crap in which others don't like. So no $3000 Moogs (I wish) but I do have a MG-1 Moog, Ensoniq VFX, Ensoniq SQ-80 rack mount, Alesis Ion, Roland JX3P, Kawai K3, Kawai K1, Casio CZ 101 to name a few. Smatterings of samplers, drum machines and other ear-scraping fun. I used to be really into circuit bending and altering things, of which a fancy contraption called the Space Box came about, and my White Nightmare Casio MT-40...I have a YouTube channel under KillKyleWeiss if you're curious. :)

Are planning to go the Vegas pipe show in November?
Hmm...I'm not sure if you're just testing my pipe loyalty or not, but a 900 mile round-trip for such things probably isn't going to happen. :) I also avoid Las Vegas if I can...

Welcome to Bob from central Florida....plenty of reading to do with all the info available here. Hope you are having a good day...

No, no test, I just forgot how big Nevada is! I'm not a huge fan of Vegas either, but I'm making an exception for the pipe show.

Had I been closer, or by some miracle a quantum singularity allowed me to get there, I would...:) Yeah, much to my grandmother's dismay at some point in no recent past, Reno is NOT "right next door" to Las Vegas. It happens to many people. Nevada is, indeed, expansive. I can only imagine how people in Alaska feel...

Hey there, welcome!

I lived in Reno in the late 70's. I have no idea of what it's like now, but it was a growing place at that time. I learned to downhill ski on Mt. Rose, learned to fly fish on the Truckee River, and tooled around the Old Town Mall area when I still rode skateboards. The Reno Jazz Festival was a big thing around that time too. I began to take trumpet seriously there as well, which now is my profession. Great memories there.

I went to Pine Middle School which I later learned had been the site of some sort of Columbine like shooting. That really saddened me.

Reno's changed a lot. Thank goodness. It's slowly veering away from a casino-based economy into an events/Nevada industry kind of place. It needs this kind of change.

There's literally around 100 events yearly here, though I think the Jazz Festival still occurs. I think they wrap it into our ArTown events.

I like it here well enough, it's cheap to live, has actual seasons, and is close to many neat things. :)

Thanks, all of you, for the warm welcomes. I intend to learn, share and explore much here. :)

...did I mention what varied backgrounds, tastes and interests everyone has here? I shoulda signed up a long time ago... great forum, guys. Seriously. Thanks!
