Hello my new family. I am new to the pipe smoking family, and I hope I can learn how to really enjoy the briar here. I am an avid cigar smoker, but it seems as thaough I needed to take up the pipe as well. So far I have started with a Dr. Grabow Grand Duke pipe, and some buttered rum tobacco. So far I am having trouble keeping it lit. I have tried the three step approach to filling my pipe, and the three stage lighting technique. I am like a sponge at the moment, so if anyone has any pointers PLEASE HELP!!!. :|

Welcome! It can be a challenge keeping any pipe lit, it just takes tons of practice, and some experimentation. Even the most seasoned pipe smoker among us usually has to lite a few times. if the tobacco is very wet, letting it dry out on a paper towel for a few hours can help. Browse the forum, post often, and before you know it, you'll be enjoying your smoke in no time :bounce:

Another factor is getting the pack right. once you get the pack right, the heat will continue in my experience. With that being said, focus on the pack first worry about not having to light often. get the one the other will follow.

What Ataki said. When I started here I thought Melange was the be all and end all of pipe tobacco. But then BoB got hold of me and I saw my meager two tin collection skyrocket to cover most (due to the shortage of FVF, Penz., etc) of the adored tobaccos. And I've barely scratched the surface. Look forward to many ah-ha moments while reading the forums, both in taste suggestions and technique. For those very new to the obsession, mastering the technique is the biggest bang for the buck imho.

As far as your specific question, I find it comes from the practiced balance of how much to really get it lit at which stage. I tend to get things really cooking on top for the first light, let it go out, tamp slightly, and then do the 'true' light much more gently. There's some bite risk with my start up method, but I find I have very little trouble keeping it lit from that point onwards. I figure the heat to start dries out the top layers enough to truly light, then as the bowl progresses, very slowly, the tobacco below comes into smoking equilibrium and burns much more evenly and continually. Drying the tobacco out as a whole has the potential to make the whole bowl burn very fast and almost tasteless (to me, though if it works for others there is validity).

Welcome! Keeping the pipe lit for longer periods will come in time. It took me a while to get the "feel" of a well packed bowl, when to tamp, when not to tamp, and even when to just let the fire go out. And I'm still learning.

Packing was always troublesome for me back in the day when I started. I get the pack right 99% of the time, nowadays, but every once in a while you'll press too hard. Don't stress on it. Practice makes perfect. It's half the fun!

Welcome to the BoB!

Welcome, friend, you've come to the right place. Lost of knowledge (and bull as well  ) here. Don't hesitate to ask any questions you might have, and check the back threads, as lots of topics have been addressed to some level before.

Natch

Thanks to everyone for all the pats on the back. I got my E.A. Careys Magic Inch pipe in yesterday, and I gotta say I love that pipe. My first bowl I only packed halfway, and it smoked like a dream-never went out. I got some cream cherry tobacco with it (It was a kit for beginners) and a pipe tool and cleaners and the whole nine yards. I guess it goes without saying you get what you pay for. Don't get me wrong I love my Dr. Grabow, as it was my first pipe, but this Careys pipe is gonna be my new best friend. I was so excited that I got out of bed around 2AM, and packed me a full bowl, and had a very nice, cool flavorful smoke. I still have a lot to learn, but I am so glad I found this place. Thanks again for the warm welcome from everyone. Chris

Howdy everyone.
Just a quick post to let you all know I'm faring better with the Dr. Grabow now. Got a good cool smoke a few times. Only problem is that after a good puff, the next time I can hardly get any smoke out of it. What am I doing wrong?

Just wandering if anyone has tried the CAO Cherrybomb pipe tobacco? I know that the cigars of the same distinction are excellent, but I'm waterin' at the mouth wanting to try the pipe tobacco. I have read some reviews that says it stinks, and some say it is good. I figure since I am apt to trust my new friends and all the knowledge here I'd ask you guys. Thanks, Chris

Welcome to the forum! As for the Cherrybomb, I think it all depends on what you like, if you like the cigar version, you will probably be pretty pleased with it. I'm not big on flavored cigars, but I do enjoy it in pipe tobacco. The best thing bout this hobby is if you buy it and don't like it, you can trade with someone on here for something else!
