Hi guys,
First off, I'd like to say "Thanks" for hosting a great site. A bit of browsing and I was well on my way.
I guess I'm enjoying my new vice, as I found I needed to get a second pipe to give the other a chance to rest. 8)

I started with a very (very!) cheap pipe and a sample pack of different tobaccos from a reputable local tobacconist, and a week later I was convinced I needed another.... Yet another entry level pipe but a definitely a step up.

I'm just getting an idea of which tobaccos I prefer, but I find myself enjoying one sold as Exotic Dark English, with a very pungent, smokey and somewhat astringent aroma. I've also enjoyed a "Robust Burley". I'm not proving to be such a fan of the flavored sweet types though.
Any suggestions and guidance along these lines would be welcome!

I have to admit, I'm fascinated by the thought of making a pipe or two... I've got a modest work-shop, a life time of carpentry skills, and I'm always looking for an excuses to try new things (and get more tools!)

Cheers all!
-Chris

Welcome aboard.I am going to your great country tommorow.I am a big fan of English blends also. take care A

Thank you all for a very warm welcome, this seems like a very friendly place.
I started with a pipe in an effort to quit smoking (or at least cut down) and so far seem to be doing just that. Hopefully that trend will continue, and I'll be able to kick that one habit, and replace it with this one.... which seems to be a least a little healthier... and far more interesting!

So what's the story with pipe tobacco? It seems to be quite a different beast than regular cigarette tobacco.

Welcome Chris... A great place to read so many topics and learn.. I am new here myself and have learned a great deal.. Glad to see ya here...

Welcome aboard Chris!

What part of the Dominion do you hail from? I am down in Southwestern Ontario, near Chatham.

As to pipe smoking as tool to quit cigarettes, it has worked for me. I used to go through eight large packs a week, and i now smoke about 2 to 2 1/2 ounces of pipe tobacco a week. (For Americans: Canada has two sizes of cigarette packs 20's and 25's, I'll assume you can figure which one we call "large" ;-) )

the one thing you have to watch is the tendency to "hot box" your pipe looking for that nicotine "hit", which if you aren't inhaling just isn't going to happen. So you huff and puff and the pipe gets hot, and the tobacco burns hot, and then it reachs out and bites your tongue. You will get nicotine, but primarily through your mouth tissues, and never that direct hit into your lungs and directly into your blood stream like a cigarette. Kind of like getting it from a patch. But the joys of taste that you gain will soon surpass any loss you experience from that n-rush of the first cigarette of the day. The difference between a Rothmans and a Export A is nothing compared to the differences between a nice Virginia flake and the delightful blue smoke of a latakia laced English Blend. IMHO YMMV

Does your local have the Brigham's "Mr. B's" tins yet? While the "Yanks" have to wait for the Dunhill blends to re-appear on their shelves, we apparently are getting them here and now, but with Brigham's private labelling. You have to pay our overtaxed prices of course, but you do on anything you buy locally.

Thank you Al, I'm glad to hear it helped you. I'm already finding that Im losing my taste for cigarettes. I've cut down already from about a pack'n a half to a generous half pack a day. I find myself lighting one, only to put it out and reach for my pipe instead.

I've been down that road of "hot-boxing" my pipe already.... and learned that tongue bite is no fun. Makes drinking a Coke a whole new experience!
I am learning to take it a little slower now, and I find my new 2nd pipe smokes much more niceley than my first: "Made in Intaly" [sic], and seems to lend itself to a more mellow, calmer smoke. Strange.

I'll check at the tobacconists when next I'm in, they do carry, IIRC, Brigham's Pipes, so if the tobacco you mentioned is related there is a good chance. I'll be sure to ask.
I've only begun to sample the huge rack of bulk tobaccos, so I've got a ways to go yet; I think I better start writing some of this stuff down.

BTW I'm in Red Deer, AB, which I somewhat jokingly refer to as the Armpit of Alberta... well, I really call it something else not suitable for the polite company I find myself amongst here!
:D

Kind regards,
