Howdy Pilgrims,

Long time lurker first time member/poster here. I just wanted to thank you all for years of endless entertainment! The situation here in Australia is pretty dire for pipe smokers, we are currently paying upwards of 5 to 10 times the price of tobacco in other countries. A 50g tin in America for one brand is only $7, the same tin here is $48. After import duties ($400 a kilogram) there is not much saving to be had from ordering online. Still, we plug (hehe) away.

A friend and I have been blogging of late our ramblings and rantings with regard to pipes. Our adventures (or misadventures) are also there. If anyone would like to drop by please do so! We don't sell anything but the love of the pipe :)

Re. expensive habit, tell me about it! Luckily I have a good sized stockpile from when I started about 15 years ago. My wife and I came back from Europe (holiday) and I had 1.5 kilograms of tobacco in my carry-on luggage. The customs guys scanned or bags and the red lights went off. I thought it was the baccy, turns out it was the giant carved candles we had purchased in Barcelona. To a scanning machine at the time candles and plastic explosive ID'd as the same  Suffice to say, I got through with several tins of Orlik's Strong Dark Kentucky Flake and several tins of various W.O.Larsen and sundry.

One day it will be all gone though and I'll be paying the same prices as poor Hobo Dave.

To paraphrase Georges Herment, when you can only afford one bowl a day you soon become an economical smoker. In our houses there is no dottle allowed and you must smoke slow!

Sorry your tobacco situation is dire. Taxes in the US are supposed to double or triple in the next few months.

Welcome. I look at each story of astronomically priced tobacco such as your own as a cautionary tale of what we can expect in the States in the coming months/years. Glad to have you here.

Welcome! Wow. That will be the future of tobacco taxes in the United States soon. Maryland legislature is looking to increase the OTP tax to 95% of wholesale cost. Currently, it is 30%, being raised from 15% just last summer. Already placed my first order of more tinned tobacco online for the cellar.
