I don't know what it is about Southeast Kentucky that brings early graves to so many. Maybe the Scotch-Irish roots so many carry..

Mom's side of the family always talked about "Fall's of Rough, KY" being where they hailed from. But I have to wonder if that was just a stopping place between SE KY and central IL.

Hard to say.

Falls of the Rough is about 35 minutes from here when I was driving, 40 minutes here for the Mrs in the sunshine, 1:40 for here for her if it's raining. Lol.


I'm from the Bimble/Hinkle line from up the Hawn Branch (we pronounced it Horn branch) of Fighting Creek. History has it that it's the creek Daniel Boone followed into those parts but who really knows. You can run that branch to Turkey Creek, Stinking Creek, or even out to Pineville if you've enough gas in your dirt bike or three wheeler and enough firepower on you to discourage the pot growers and meth cookers from messing with you.

I sometimes miss it but it's filled with dead folk and memories... Everything there is dying or dead. Every decade or so there's this big push to 'revilatize' the area and a flurry of construction takes place, a decade later it's all rotted to nothing.

A history of northern money exploiting the natural resources, including her native sons, and big fish is a small pond protecting their swimming hole prevents anything of substance happening. Probably why I get so angry at the racist ******** of 'white privilage' and people like the Alinsky twins saying whites don't understand poverty. I want to scream at them, "get with me when your babies have to breathe stoker coal to stay warm, and wear third and fourth time hand me down clothes to keep from being naked, and eat nothing but potatoes three meals a day to keep from going hungry". Truly a dirt poor place, both economically and spiritually.

The men in my family have always either worked themselves to death or died on foreign shores fighting for what they believed was freedom and peace in this nation. Sometimes I wish I could have been born 100 years ago so I could at least starve out with a little dignity. Now they've rigged the system to where no one can afford to help you but them, so you have to go grovelling to big brother asking for his hand out. I guess I'm in a mood... I spent all day yesterday and all last night trying to fill out round six of their paperwork asking me just why exactly it is I can't manage to go drive a truck anymore. "Hello, I'm on narcotics and need help getting off the pooper, this ain't rocket science!!"

An interesting tidbit: the peace between White men of Kentucky and the entirety of the Cherokee Nations is ensured every year with the signing of the Cane treaty. It only goes back to 1948 but it's the longest recorded treaty between the Cherokee and any other people. The gist of it is: We let them back into Kentucky once a year to harvest all the cane they can carry and they share their culture at a feast in their honor held in Barbourville, Ky. It's been endangered several times by completely disrespectful and ignorant arseholes but thankfully cooler heads have always prevailed and we haven't had to go to war.

Barbourville is kind of on my map to see one day. As I pass though I plan to see more of eastern KY & TN on my way down to the Atlanta area. Those parkways across KY make for relaxed driving. I'll holler if I get near. The older I get, the less I am in a hurry to get there in one day. Some of those two-lanes have the most interesting sights.

Right.. But remember I'm in Brandenburg,near Louisville now.. And we have some history here.  When Morgan went raiding and raising Cane during The War of Northern Agression, or as I like to call it, The War when the Federal Government usurped the Constitution (  ) he passed through here, commandeered two steam ships and razed into Indiana.. No idea why. They can't grow tobacco, their liquor is no good, and most of their girls are ugly.. But so goes war.

Thanks for sharing PB. Being Kentucky transplant, and as far north in the Commonwealth as you can get, there's still a lot of this gorgeous place to discover. Seeing that photo from Corbin reminds me when the Mrs. and I were looking at where to take some time to get away for a week a couple years back. It was down to the wire and we ended up in Corbin and the Cumberland Falls area and couldn't have been happier. Only other places I've really visited has been Land Between the Lakes/Cadiz and Loretto as we have family in both. Luckily, the sis-in-law lives a couple miles from Maker's Mark Oh the smell of mash in the morning!

I had never heard it, pb. Maybe I've led too sheltered a life, musically...although it always surprises me when I feel compelled to admit that, onna counta both my musical exposure and my musical tastes are pretty wide-ranging.

Anyhow, I missed this one until now, so thanx for posting it, bro'. Awesome performance. I can imagine it being done differently, but can't imagine it being done better...and as you say, certainly not truer to the spirit of the original pathos you've described in your big follow-up post. I love the vibe created by the quintessentially 'Merican folk instrumentation. The other thing I love is the whole minor key vibe, which is directly influenced by the Scottish-Irish heritage of much of the South. A humongous amount of 'Merican folk and bluegrass music derives directly from that heritage.

I know about where you are. I might cross the Ohio there next trip. LOL Indiana has the trashiest roads. There was a mattress with grass and weeds growing threw it on I65 south of Indy that I know was in the median for two years.

PB, Kentucky is one of my favorite states to make a run through. Not only is it gorgeous, but rich in history. In fact, historians now know that the fellow who invented the toothbrush was from eastern Kentucky. They say that if he had been from anywhere else, it would have been called a "teethbrush."

PB, I should probably be banned for more than regionalism, but there is no need to be offended. The current rules of political correctness in 2016, state that any insult, as long as it is between 2 hillbilly's, is no longer considered an insult, but rather a "term of endearment."

As for my point, well I suppose that I meant to say that the state of Kentucky has a lot more to offer, than just coal and coal miners. They make the finest bourbon, breed the fastest horses, and produced the first amendment champion, gentleman and scholar Larry Flynt.

The latter is most likely one feat that Salyersville High School will have a dang hard time repeating, but most likely once is enough!
