Is Peterson going to make it?

Fathers day is in two weeks, no sign of the annual Peterson fathers day pipes yet. They show them listed on Peterson's web site, but no retailers seem to have them yet. They usually start selling these special editions well in advance, the St Parick's day and Christmas pipes are always available weeks ahead of time. If dad's are going to get one of these as a gift this year they'd better appear this week or the pipes will never be shipped in time for dad to receive it by fathers day.

As an aside, thePeterson pipe I special ordered in january that was supposed to be here in april is still nowhere to be seen. The new Iceberg And Dracula pipes have been advertised as well for weeks now without a single example seen in any online retailers website. I hope they're not going to step in it this year.....

Maybe next year we'll see the fathers day pipes overstamped, 2013 heavily stamped over the 2012 stamp. No point trying to sell this years edition in july or august.

Sounds like the usual Peterson production process! They have been known to hit snaffu's on series in the past. I understand they have some new folks in mgt. that are trying to get them turned around quality wise on production this past year. They are a small firm, and are STILL making their pipes IN Ireland and they do things differently than the rest of the world over there as I've understood :p Thank goodness there are lots of Sav's available for Father's Day! :p

I heard their entire line is being re-designed after some 33-year-old smartass in Nevada proved they were faulty. ;)

They have the models pictured on their website, but I will be darned if I can find them either. Those Dracula pipes look awesome...may have to just be the first Pete I buy.

I read somewhere, and I wish I could remember where, that the Father's Day pipes were not going to be shipped to the U.S. this year. No reason was given.

agreed! if they had a Dracula 80S I'd be first in line

I realize we are already well beyond Fathers Day for this year, but after searching and searching I found out that any pipes that are not made available in the US are able to be purchased directly through Peterson. I have put in an inquiry now about their Fathers Day pipes to see if they still have any lying around and will get back with any details I find out. I am hoping tis isn't the case with the Dracula series too. Irregardless neither can be my first Pete because I picked up a Irish Made Army shape 69 today. But yeah, I will pass along any info they give me.

Cup O Joe's has the Iceberg pipe but you need to do a search for them, I just searched their website for the keyword iceberg. They have 4 shapes in both smooth and rusticated. I was not able to find the Dracula anyplace.

I wish I knew what was going on with the Dracula series. April was the 100th anniversary of Bram Strokers death. That was about the only thing that made sense as for those pipes to come out but nada.

I'm curious about this topic too. I can only offer totally speculative ramblings, but if I look at Peterson's current offerings, it seems to me that they have tried to offer some real "budget" sort of pipes, the Kapet pipes, for example, and sort of tried to hit the "specialty" market, with all these commemorative pipes (Iceberg for god's sake? I mean, how about a pipe celebratory of the long neck beer bottle, or of radial tires?? Get my drift here?) and re-issues etc. Mark Twain, Molly Malone, blah blah blah. And making just good, middle of the road pipes has been.... continued, but sort of taken for granted.

The Petes I've seen recently left me wanting. I had EVERY intention of buying the 2010 year pipe. Except it sucked. Saw a few in person. Poor sanding, plasticy finish, bowl coating filling the airway.... this is not a 250 dollar pipe. The System Standards were no longer Standard - lots of misdrills, very little attention to detail.

I see a company like Stanwell, who, let's face it, made a very good pipe at a very competitive price, close their doors more or less, or at least have to re-work (sub-out) their process. It's incredible.

So I think Peterson is struggling. Struggling with workmanship, struggling with changing markets. From the sounds of one report, struggling with raw material supply. It's a tough business.

To my eye, when I see a company promise something and then fail to deliver, when I see a company lose track of its basic product in attempts to expand and conquer, I see a company that might not be around too much longer. And that would be a huge shame.

I must have missed this thread. After reading it (and agreeing with the notion), it's sad, but Peterson might not be doing so hot. :| I suppose it'd be a good idea to pick a few more up.

My last new Peterson 80s was actually a reject, as far as I'm concerned. The tenon was stuck when I received it, had to put it in the freezer for a while to dislodge it. The stem can still not be turned 360 degrees. I had to widen the airhole in the shank to remove the restriction there. And, of course, I had to remove the dye from the tobacco chamber.

Can't see myself buying a new Pete again

Way to be a Debbie Downer Speedy...Jeesh. I will definitely pick up a couple more Petes, definitely have to get my hands on one of the Dracula pipes at some point in time, the coloration on them is just too perfect. And the lower end pipes of theres are still a decent price. The Irish Made Army shape 69 (Giggity) I just picked up was only 73 with shipping which is acceptable. I would hate to see Peterson go down the tubes I am still too much a noob to have amassed a collection of their pipes.

Sorry to hear of the problems with your Pete 80s, Speedy.

Over the past year I've added several new Petes to the collection, and they have been great pipes so far. One of the latest was a Kinsale XL 21. It's a fine smoker attention to detail is evident.

Peterson will continue to be one which gets consideration from me anyway.

As always, ymmv......

In all fairness I must add that the 80s, a Donegal Rocky, has become one of my top 5 favourite smokers, despite it's shortcomings!

I've always been a Peterson fan (The thinking man smokes a Peterson) but quality has gone down for sure.

I also have a Limerick 150 which was pure hell to break in. I was at the point of getting rid of it but then it started to give in. The "Limerick" stamp is smudged to a point where, if you don't know what's supposed to be there, you won't be able to read it. But this pipe also developed into a favourite, eventually.

When I received the Limerick, it was the wrong pipe actually. I've ordered a Killarney and received confirmation, directly from Peterson, that the pipe was on it's way to our local distributor. After 3 months of waiting, said distributor declared the Killarney AWOL and offered me the Limerick at a much reduced price.

It seems as if agents can't order specific pipes. They can place their orders but then they must wait and see what arrives. I can buy top of the range Petersons at our local B&M but middle of the road models are not available.

So, all in all, I've decided to steer clear of Peterson.

Below is the response from Peterson. They are botch straight stem pipes so I am passing on them but if anyone is interested they are available.

The only two shapes that are left in stock are listed below,

** fathers day 264,

** fathers day 107,

both have fishtial stem and no 9mm filter, they retail for € 52.50 and the registered
postage to the USA will be € 10.00,

we accept visa, mastercard and amex for all mailorder requests, please include your expiry date and security

You, sir, are my new favorite person. Not only have I really wanted one of these (given that this was my first Father's Day), I have wanted a 264 for a while now (actually almost ordered one from SP yesterday, but thought the better of it at the last minute).

Its been less than an hour since I first read this post, and she's already on her way stateside.

Many thanks brother!
