Was browsing around on 4Noggins and noticed a new tobacco called Barlings which I suppose is either a reissue or a new offering based on the reputation of Barling pipes. Nothing about them on TR yet. One of them though is an English comprised of Kentucky and Latakia which intrigues me. I don't think I have heard of any blend with both Kentucky and Latakia. So throwing it out there. Has anyone...

a) tried a blend with Kentucky and Latakia....I guess that would be a Lantucky or maybe Kentuckia.
b) tried Barlings tobacco and can share about it.

Cheers!

There are a good many blends I've tried or heard of with KY and Lat.
*HH Vintage Syrian--big latakia and has kentucky
*Dan Old Ironsides--English blend with latakia
*ACPC Heady Doctrine--VA-Cav-KY with a little latakia and Perique
*H&H Blackhouse--English with KY
*Sutliff Old San Francisco--English (aromatic?) with KY
*C&D Montford Pt. Marine--Ky-Lat-Per

I think they can definitely work well together.

That's just for starters; KY is used alongside Lat in lots and lots of blends.

So, I know they are both smoky weeds, and different materials used to make the smoke. The Kentucky is a lighter smoke taste than the Latakia, but the nicotine content is stronger in the KY than Lat by far.

Is that why the both are combined?

Curiosity will truly be my demise, off to get the blender out again.......

They are different tobaccos before they are even cured. Lat is lower in nicotine but more smokey. The smoke character is campfire sort of smoky, sort of piney. KY is much stronger, and I often get woody notes and a BBQ/BBQ sauce sort of taste.

That's what I thought. Kentucky is smoked Burley, Latakia is smoked Izmir, or some such Mediterranean tobaccos....

One of my favorites (Latakia and Kentucky) is Dan's Bill Bailey's Balkan. Nice and stout. While not the Latakia bomb that Old Ironsides is, it's just as flavorful and full but more balanced.

Kentucky and Latakia?   Yeah, we smoke Latakia here.
Looks like you have Cardinals as well!
Enough of them that we made them the state bird.. Which is shocking, you'd think with such a strong Southern Baptist presence our state bird would be fried chicken.

I'm not sure about Lat bombs, but I got some Villager 1888 Early Morning and thought it was all Latakia. Still not sure how to approach it and enjoy.. Figure I should smoke it up and out of the cellar, but can't seem to drink enough to work it down. Never thought 1.76 ounces could last so long...

Haven't had Villiger 1888, but I have read that it's a "Light English." Hmmm.

Given your impression of 1888, I'd stay far away from Bill Bailey's. :p

Yah, Bill Baily's. WOW. I mean, like Latakia like I like habaneros. I like spicy, don't get me wrong, but I wouldn't just eat a bushel of them with Tobasco to wash them down..

I don't smoke much Latakia. I don't care so much for it. I like Key Largo which uses it but is hardly Latakia focused. I am looking forward to McClelland Grand Orientals as I do really like Turkish tobaccos and that'll be a grand and enjoyable lesson. But as for Latakia with Kentucky, I don't know anything about it and the idea doesn't really blow my skirt up personally.

If you're a true Latophile and like you're Burley's with it then order some Special Balkan from Edward's. It's one half Latakia and the rest a combo of a couple of Burley's with a small amount of Va!  It's one of their oldest blends going back to the '60s.
