Ken, I'm not sure if you have read the book or watched the movie, but most of the Beat Generation writers drug of choice was benzedrine inhalers, taken a variety of ways. This is what inspired Kerouac and allowed him to write "the scroll" in such a short period of time.

Of course, they used a variety of other drugs as well, including pot, but it was the bennies that allowed Kerouac to write in the manner he did, as well as stay up all night driving cross country and hitchhiking.

My guess is, when using benzedrine, they rarely felt hungry. 8)
