Local shop blends vs brand name tins

Just curious, as I’m rather new to pipe smoking, what the feeling is towards local shop blends vs famous brands.

The shop near me sells a variety of stuff in jars which they have come up with their own names for. Is this generally better or worse than name brands, tins, etc or does it simply vary? What would be the best advice for a newer smoker if both are available?

From my experience shop blends are usually renamed bulk blends.
