Long term storage/ cellaring

Brothers, Happy New Year and all that good stuff!

Have been thinking about my long term storage situation……. I don’t currently smoke the pipe that often for various reasons. However, I have been trying to build my cellar.

I don’t own, I rent.

Location: North East

My current storage area is sealed lightproof boxes (cardboard!) consisting of bulk flake, jarred tobacco etc. and a reasonable assortment of tinned tobacco.  

I keep everything (my filled, assorted cardboard boxes!) on shelves of the stairwell leading to my door.

It’s not temperature controlled. Temps fluctuate year round with the changes of the seasons.  It never freezes or gets extremely hot, in the stairwell, but I’m sure that the seasonal temps gradually fluctuate a good deal.

Am I screwing myself in the long term?  Should I try to store my “cellar” in a more temperature controlled environment- that, currently, space does not allow?!

I dunno how much it matters if the temperature swing isn't too great.
It would be preferable if you could keep it consistent. How 'bout under the bed?

Avoid temp extremes and use mason/ball jars for bulk or opened tins.
