I always get confused between a Lovat shape and a Canadian shape. Any thoughts as to what features distinguish the one from the other?

Lovat=round shank, saddle stem
Liverpool=round shank, tapered stem
Canadian=oval shank, tapered stem
Lumberman=oval shank, saddle stem

This is the traditional view but we are in the age of the "Artisan" pipe and the interweb and ALL shape designations are out the window :twisted:
( but since I don't smoke "Artisan" pipes I still go by tradition :p )

I've always gone with the descriptions thet ocelot posted,but not everyone does. Often, anything with a long shank gets lumped in the Canadian pile. :evil:

Ooooh, you've opened a can of worms right there, the link Ocelot gave you is pretty much on the money, but as I have seen before, there is debate as to whether that guy is right, personally I don't know if he's right or not but I go with it, my Lovat is exactly as his descriptions say and Peterson named my pipe a Lovat, so he's good with me. ;)

I've got a few Lovats, and used to really like lumberjacks, but these guys kind of ruined it for me.

That is such a brilliant Monty Python sketch. :)

Thanks for sharing that ocelot. Always wondered about this!

I'm 50/50 with the common view. I think the shank shape determines the lineage more than the shape of the stem. Why these were separated and other pipes keep their namesake but merely have the option of either a saddle or a taper stem, I don't know.

I had a picture of a cool Canadian-esque pipe that had a neat rectangular shape, similar to a box-pressed cigar (but not as meaty). If I find it I'll post it and see what debate that could spark. :lol: It had a saddle bit, by the way. :)

I like me a Canadian shape... I like a lovat even more. Always thought of lovats to be shorter and have a rounder shank. Whenever I smoke either of these, The first thing that comes to mind is:Zap Rowsdower!
