Upon further research I've discovered that it's more accurately called the Lyon Pipe.

http://pipedia.org/index.php?title=The_Lyon_Pipe
What made the pipe unique was that it contained an inner bowl that screwed into an outer bowl. Smoke traveled through a hole in the bottom of the inner bowl and around the threads of the screw to the bit, which was located at the top of the outer bowl, giving the pipe a unique shape. The smoke was thus cooled before it reached the smoker's mouth.
Here's a cartoon picture of what it looks like...

"The Dawes pipe (more correctly named the Lyons, after its inventor, Charles Herbert Lyons) happened to be the favorite pipe of General Charles G. Dawes, Vice-President of the United States from 1925 to 1929. General Dawes smoked the curious pipe incessantly and it became popularly known as the Dawes Underslung, because the shank joined the bowl near its rim."
Looks like there is one on eBay right now...though it has been thoroughly used.

Interesting bit o' history here.

Thats the best I could do.

It's a General Dawes. The Dawes pipe (more correctly named the Lyons, after its inventor, Charles Herbert Lyons) happened to be the favorite pipe of General Charles G. Dawes, Vice-President of the United States from 1925 to 1929. General Dawes smoked the curious pipe incessantly and it became popularly known as the Dawes Under-slung, because the shank joined the bowl near its rim.

It's more than an under-slung pipe. The sides of the bowl are hollow and smoke is drawn through little holes the length of the bowl and come up into the shank. It's a good idea which didn't work.
Hopfully yours is in better condition then the one posted above.

No I don't have one of these pipes, a guy I know picked one up for the purpose of reselling it, the pipe has nothing stamped on it other then the General, the lyons pipe was stamped lyons, the pipe which the guy has, the stem was so poorly made they didn't bother to sand the castings from the side of the vulcanite stem, he said he found one on ebay listed for 89 bucks, but the only I could find on ebay is actually stamped Lyons, the one he has I wouldn't give someone 10 bucks for, and I find it hard to believe it to be worth more, unless I am missing something that makes it more valuable

To me it looks like something DR.grabow or yello-bole would have made as a knock off, but none of there usuall stamping or stem marks on it either... unless someone replaced the stem

Most of them I believe were made in France and imported by Wally Frank and the like. None of them are of great craftsmanship, at least the one I have and others I've seen. It's a novelty pipe so I had to have one for my collection. I think I picked mine up for about $9.99 but, it's in pretty good condition and had only been smoked 3 or 4 times by the looks of it.
Nowadays, I wouldn't pay more the $3-$4 for one in the same condition (older wiser?).

I just saw a real beauty of a General Dawes pipe obtained on eBay by a friend of mine. They are not all nasty looking upside down contraptions of the type shown below. Here's the link to my friend's example:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/General-Dawes-Algerian-Briar-Vintage-French-Estate-Pipe-L2481-/281323543736?nma=true&si=y2Sv7jOZFFU3xajHmaL8197m0XM%253D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557

The bowl and shank have a hand-painted image of what appears to be a Renaissance Era oil painting and the pipe is curved for reading. I'd love to own one of that quality.

I have one in my collection as well, unless I got rid of it and forgot. I always considered it the ugliest pipe I ever acquired and wouldn't even consider smoking it. No, I didn't buy it as a single acquisition, it came in a bunch O' pipes. LOL
There was more than one manufacturer of this design, if I ever locate the one I have I'll post the particulars.
