I'm something of a tobacco snob, in many ways. My favorite blenders are GL Pease, C&D, G&H, etc. I've paid up to $100 for a single tin (Bohemian Scandal) and my cellar is positively bursting at the seams with "premium" tobaccos. I love Balkans, Va/Pers, English, etc. and spend way too much of my disposable income on them. I don't spend that much on pipes, per se, but as for what goes into them ... my philosophy is to spare no expense.

But ...

The other day I mentally took stock of what I actually smoke the most of, on a day-to-day basis, and do you know what? I smoke mostly Middleton blends.

Carter Hall is my favorite, and I smoke it every single day. It also forms the base of what I consider to be the ultimate American-English blend, which is one tub of CH mixed with a two-ounce tin of McClelland's blending latakia. But I also smoke a lot of Prince Albert, which hits the spot some days like nothing else will. Sugar Barrel has proven to be a pleasant surprise, Apple is a darn good aromatic, and Walnut is a pretty decent American English (I don't smoke much of it, but I appreciate it for what it is). And, while I wouldn't argue that any of these blends are on par qualitatively with similar but "premium" blends like Old Joe Krantz, Epiphany, or Aged Burley Flake, the bottom line is that I smoke the Middleton products more, even when money is not a concern. Why? Because they are easy to smoke, don't irritate the tongue, and can be enjoyed pretty much anytime, anywhere. They are pretty much ALWAYS enjoyable, in the way that a well-prepared burger or cup of iced tea can akways hit the spot if hungry or thirsty.

I guess I just find it interesting that, with this huge wealth of premium tinned and imported blends available to us that feature tobaccos of almost ridiculously high quality, so much satisfaction can be had with such simple, inexpensive components.

Anyway, has anyone else had the same experience with Middleton products?

Agreed. If all the world's tobacco brands disappeared tomorrow except for Middleton, I'd stick it out as a pipe smoker. I like the Carter and the Prince, but my fave remains Kentucky Club Continental. I don't smoke it every day, but I've always got a Mason jar full of the stuff within reach.

I've yet to try any Middleton blends, and not to hi-jack this page, but, I went to Smokys the other day when I first got into town. Soooooooo much better than my B+M back home. Smokys has quite a large selection of tinned baccys, where I am used to nothing but "in-store" blends. I'm heading into Gatlinburg today, and I will be swinging by Smokezy, and Gatlin-burlier. Hopefully I'll get some more!

Enjoy Smoky's -- great little B&M.

I've been smoking a pipe for nearly 20 years, and the Gatlin-Burlier was pretty much exclusively my tobacconist for the first 10 of those. Their house blend, Gatlin-Burley, is their best product: it's a top-notch American English with a very light top note. Their other two English blends, Smokies Smoke-Ease and Cumberland, are decent enough -- basically Frog Morton and Frog Morton on the Town on steroids. I don't care for aromatics much, but the ones they carry are way better than most bulk aros.
While you're there, pick up one of their house pipes. I think they are pretty much the best bang for the buck in the pipe world. For only $30 to $40, you get a briar that will likely smoke as well as most $100 pipes from makers like Savinelli, Peterson and Stanwell.

Those little ten dollar tins of tobacco are an adventure,,,but there are times when a plain old smoke strikes the mood,,,no need to savor the bouquet or sort out the complex flavors,,,,a tub of CH or Sugar Barrel seems to fit that slot and excell at it,,,,,stuff it, light it, smoke it,,,,

Much like prowling the kitchen late Thanksgiving night,,,the fridge is full of feast, but you grab a plain old turkey sandwich,,,

I smoke PA and CH interchangeably on a daily basis. I love both, and IMHO they can't be beat for OTC's.

Great thoughts and observations, thanks for sharing. Although I don't particularly care for most of those blends (except Walnut, that I smoke occasionally) it's always good to hear about what "we" (BoBs) actually prefer. I'm sure some of the combination's I blend would be odd or disgusting to others, and my like of filter pipes and Kirstens might not be "appropriate", but they sure work for me.

Smoke what you like and like what you smoke, as the old addage goes.

Natch

I smoke alot of Carter Hall and Prince Albert. Both are good burley blends. I know they are not top quality but they smoke good and taste good. Did I mention they are easy on the wallet and no shipping fees.

One day a few weeks back the baccy that i brought to work in my pouch just wasnt agreeing with me..I stopped and bought a pouch of PA to try
and couldnt beleive how good it was. To me its just plain enjoyable. I wish i tryed it alot sooner.
