Dear brothers, I'm waiting for two of these pipes, a cherry and a maple. I've never smoked one of them and I'm curious to know what to expect. Are they like cobs, briars or are they a specie on their own?

I thank you, gentlemen

Cherry pipes have long and beautiful history. Some makers of good reputation like French ROPP used to make a lot of cherry pipes.

I did never smoke any other pipe then these of briar and meerschaum, but many of my pipe friends did. All of them say that cherry pipes are usually good smokers, providing with sweet smoke. It is just that they should be smoked with special care/attention, because the cherry is not as "heat resistant" as briar, clay, etc.

My wife smokes the MM hardwood pipes exclusively. She only smokes a few bowls a year so they don't see a lot of work, but she's had two for 6-8 years and neither shows any signs of wearing out. They are light and smoke pretty well. I prefer a cob, the wood adds a bit of flavor for me. My Mrs. doesn't notice a touch of cherry wood flavor messing up her cherry tobacco.

I have a few of the mm ozarks good all around pipes for the cost, and if you break 1 or lose it the cost won't set you back. The only thing i found is take and litely sand inside of bowl to get rid of the varnish.

An Ozark was actually my first pipe, I enjoyed it. I've since moved on to briars and cobs, I've yet to try morta or meer though. If I had to pick from the MM lines I'd certainly go for a cob, the wooden pipes aren't really anything to write home about, but it does offer a good no-nonsense smoke. It should also be noted both pipes are maple, the cherry is only stained differently.

Thank you very much, gentlemen. I appreciate your feedback. In a nutshell, although a hardwood is not a briar it's not useless either?!
