Morta: How Does It Smoke?

The consensus seems to be that the tobacco is more complex and that the bowl is hotter.

I liken the smoking experience to that of a meerschaum in that morta imparts no taste to the tobacco and the full flavor of the tobacco is realized.

Ya know, I know nothing of Morta pipes but I disagree about Meerschaum pipes, I filled my Turk Meer and my Quintex Apple with exactly the same baccy and smoked them side-by-side, I found no noticeable difference what so ever in flavour. I have to admit it was with Kendal Balkan Flake, not exactly the most abundant of flavours tobacco, wish I had thought of trying it with that Jack Knife plug Jim sent me, may have been a different story, I'll never know now though!

I wouldn't say a more complex smoke is had out of a morta at all. It's just different. Yes, the density/porosity causes the bowls to get a tad hotter, however.

Well, the only morta I've smoked is my Askwith morta, maybe a wider range is required to get a solid opinion... However from my experience it does not alter the taste of the tobacco, but gives a very clean experience of it, and the bowl gets incredibly hot. I cant hold my pipe by the bowl when I'm smoking my morta, its ridiculous how much heat it transmits.

I liken the experience to meerschaum in that it imparts nothing to the taste as opposed to briar which imparts its own nuances. Briar is a different smoke than meer and morta - and meer is similar to morta.

I own 3 morta and 5 meer's and I get a similar experience in, that as you say, "it does not alter the taste of the tobacco, but gives a very clean experience of it". I concur.

My Askwith Morta also burns hotter than... Hell. Though my Askwith briar also smokes very hot. Not sure what to make of that.
I am not experienced enough to give an informed opinion on the differences in smoking qualities.

Like everyone has mentioned, morta smokes a bit hot.
Flavor wise, I would say morta offers a slightly more detailed, nuanced smoke.
I have an Il Duca morta bulldog, and a very similar briar bulldog by the same carver, and the difference in taste is subtle, but the component flavors seem to emerge more clearly defined in the morta pipe...
However, "seem to" is the operative phrase, because what is ever clearly defined in the medium of smoke?

Having five Mortas from four different carvers (Todd Harris, Davorin Denovic, Chris Askwith and Mario Grandi) the "smoking experience" of each is slightly different when it comes to the bowl temperature.

For example, the ones with a thicker bowls smoke cooler then the thinner ones (I think the same could be said for briar). However, I also have a "fast" puffing cadence at times too and when they start to get hot, I know I have to slow down.

The one thing I did find that as fast as they heat up, they also cool down fast too (this could be due to their density)

As far as their affects on the tobacco flavor goes, I have to agree with the consensus that it gives a "clean experience of it".

And when I compare this to my Meerschaums and their affects on the flavor ", the two are similar but different".

Sorry to bring up an old post, but I am considering having a morta bulldog made by Chris Askwith. I love the aesthetics of a morta pipe. I am curious for those that have morta pipes, how well you like them.

I like mine very much, no complaints apart from the tendency to get hotter than a briar pipe would. Mine is from Chris and I certainly agree he does great work, you'll be safe working with him.

I have several Mortas (one is a rhodesian with an olivewood cap by Chris) and other then smoking a little "hotter" then briars, I find that they are really good smokers
