Hi brothers,

I received in a trade with another member, some mm965 and last week was my first ever bowl of this blend. I never liked English blends. The closest Ive come to them was some a few "crossover" mixtures. I have to say Wow, I am now converted. the only aro's I now smoke are lake-land.From now on I shall launch into the new and Delicious world of English mixtures!

It is a classic and no mistake. I haven't tried the current iteration yet (though I have an unopened tin lying around somewhere) but the Murray's production was my go-to English blend for several years. Have you tried Squadron Leader?

No, I'm entirely new to genuine English blends. I'll put that on my list though. So far I've tried a sample of Penzance that I got, and that too is incredible. Other than that it's a couple of Lakelands and university flake.

I've tried almost every popular English blend out there in the past four years, nothing really hits the mark for me like MM965. It has just enough latakia to satisfy that need and I like the flavor pop from the brown cavendish. The ribbon just also smokes very well. It had been and will be my daily smoke for the foreseeable future.

Both 965 and nightcap are stellar IMO. I would say I divvy my smokes between English and VaPers with about 75% of them going to the former. I've tried quite a few and while there are gems everywhere, those two are definitely among my desert island blends.

So far, I really enjoy every tobacco mentioned in this thread! All good stuff. I'm not stellar in the tobacco review department, but I'll add that I've recently tried Gaslight and absolutely LOVE it. I'm not sure what it is, but it reminds me of the MM965, and Peterson's Sweet Killarney. But again, I really don't a lot yet about tobacco, I just enjoy it.

Uh yeah...after you talked it up so highly I had to go out and buy a can...or three! It was on sale, and I'm so glad I got three cans.

Looks like it's now out in 8 oz tins. SP has it.

Cheers,

was just coming to say this. ordered a few. Gaslight is one of my favorites when i have tmie to prep it up. I've actually picked up a few more dunhill blends because the ribbon cut is so no-nonsense. I can pack those while i drive. MM, EMP are easy to smoke.

PS - I've enjoyed the hell outta wilderness and legends from mcclellands.

I got off the Dunhill train back when the production changed and the shortages. Should get back on though and give them a try.

I started with Nightcap and went up the lightness ladder and ended up with EMP and Standard 1.  Always figured those for my desert island blends.

Sadly, 965 didn't do it for me. I know, I'm a heathen.

Having smoked 965 from the time it was made by Dunhill, then McConnall, then Murray's and now Orlik/STG, ALL of these folks have maintained it's characteristics all the years I smoked it. It is definitely a "classic" and I keep a tin of it on hand always. I don't smoke Engish/ Balkans all that much but another faveorite Dunhill blend would be London Mixture which is more slanted to the Oriental side . Give it a try and of course a "must smoke" Dunhill blend is Royal Yacht.

I have some 965 from 2000 that I received in a trade with Brewdude and it rocks!
It has mellowed a bit but is incredibly balanced from top to bottom of the bowl with great flavors.
Gaslight is really special also.

While I agree with you on the Royal Yacht, you and I will eternally disagree about My Mixture 965. What is made today is no where near the blend I started smoking in 1966. Not close even. The Murrays's was different but it was still recognizable as MM965.

This thread prompted me to open a Mason jar of MM 965 that I put away back in 2001. I fired it up out on the deck on a nice though chilly New England day with Spring just starting to bust out. The pipe is a CAO meer billiard (better make it a chimney billiard). The experience was wonderful. The Lat had receded a bit, but the Virginia and cav were sweet as apple pie, and silky smooth from beginning to end with a fine manly aroma and never a hint of a nip. I went 2/3 of the way to the bottom on the charring light and the rest of he way on relight. And to think, this leaves the rest of the quart jar yet to be visited:)
