I never knew my grandfather, he passed away in 1977 in rural Nebraska... 10 years before I was born. Grandpa Stanley was born in 1908, a hundred years before my daughter was born, she's known as the family's century baby.

Mama made a trip home a couple of years ago and mailed the pipe rest to me, it's a nice treasure to have in the house. It's steadily been front and center in our home decor although I have no idea when it was made, whom it was made by or where it was acquired. It holds a special place either under our TV or near my night stand. Grandpa smoked Sir Walter Raleigh, I acquired an old empty tin from the garage and it's usually not far away from the display; I've tried the stuff and never have found the taste for it. Maybe one day....

For once I've got a piece of wood that I refuse to refinish no matter what

That is a nice pipe rack brother especially with the family history.

Love the stories that lie behind the pieces.

Thanks for sharing.

Nice rack and your pipes look great in it. The work you put into them is evident. Good job.
Say, you ever see any pipe smokers at Kadena, Naha or Shields? When I was stationed there I saw a total of two of us forty odd years ago.

thanks for sharing.. as other I love the stories behind family passed down items.. you got a gem.. cherish it

You're very lucky, I don't think many of us have a piece of pipe history from our families.

No Sir, not yet. I honestly haven't spent a heck of a lot of time on Shields, and smoking on Kadena is prohibited in most locations. I'd love to find a pipe shop here in Okinawa but I've got no clue where to start looking. For those that I have seen smoking, they're going for those Black & Mild drugstore cigars stuffed with pipe tobacco. I've tried one underway, it wasn't anything to brag about...

Have you ever walked Morimizato? A fantastic street full of fantastic shops when I was there.
BC street leads right to it. Used to be that if you wanted something and couldn't find it in BC street Morimizato was the place to head.
Forty years ago is a long time and for all I know all the shops may be gone, but on Oki I don't know where they'd go.

BC street as in B.C. Used Cars on the right hand side out of Kadena Gate 2? Close to the busiest intersection in Okinawa?

I've driven through there but never actually stopped to look around, I'll have to do that sometime soon :)

No used car lot when I was there but the rest of the description fits.

Car lot was probably named for BC street, these days it's a lot of bars, tattoo shops and other stuff my wife has no interest in walking around so we haven't spent more than 3 minutes driving through on our way around the island.

Yup. Same place. :D
Moromizato is different. Tamer place altogether and used to be very nice shops.
