With 80+ pipes I have no "need" for another pipe, much less a 7th Pete :p But I have found a pipe I WILL add to my others this next year !! One of the "regulars" that comes to the B&M Wed. night "smokes' is a transpalnted Irishman from Dublin and he goes back for a month every year and he's a confirmed Pete smoker owning around 50 + of 'em and he always stops in at Peterson's in Dublin when he's there so I'm saving my pennies for a Pete which he has 3 of ! It is one of their high grades and from the one of his I have seen and handled looks to be worth every penny they want for 'em. It's a 999 Grafton and from the pics of 'em and the three of his I have seen they are FANTASTIC!! Here's a pic I found over on the IPPC site of a 999 and hopefully by mid summer next year one of 'em will be mine :p PAD is so bad

I've been eyeing that exact model too, it's a beauty. Two and a half bills. You're paying for nice grain, no fills and good finish. Not too much really, considering.

Damn! The 999 is one of my most favorites, and I have a humble pedestrian issue I got about 10+ yrs ago. It's one of my go-to's and a favorite smoker, and always smokes anything and everything fine.

That one you posted a pic of is appealing beyond measure. Especially like the Cumberland stem. That clearly sets it off.

Hope you can make this one of your next pipes mon.

Cheers,

RR

I really dig the Cumberland stem on Petes, just enough around to make them special.

999 Shape, Fishtail and a Cumberland stem = Gold Medal in my book.

You guys never learn eh, look, you don't have to keep trudging through life feeling that way, look, just box up all your pipes less 7 of them and send them all to me. They'll get a loving and caring new home and you will have so few pipes left that enduring PAD will become essential and justified once again.

No need to thank me, just send them to me now and say no more about it. :lol!:

Is this real cumberland? Wasn't there some drama about the Pete "cumberland" stems actually being acrylic?

They are acrylic now. I don't know exactly when they made the switch. The Pete in monbla's pic is an older model with an actual cumberland stem. These days the Peterson Grafton pipes have an acrylic stem.

Intersting. When I get it I'll have to see how it "fits" , as I prefer ebonite bits, and if it is not to my liking, off to Walker to get fitted for one of their German vulcanite Cumberland bits. Then I'll just put the OEM bit in the box and go on my way ! :p Easy solution to that ! :p

Exactly what I was going to suggest. A couple of retailers still have some NOS Petes with cumberland. It wouldn't hurt to call them up and see. It could save you $50. (Is that how much Walker charges for a stem replacement these days?)

I have a suggestion and some comments. First, the comments. The present incarnation of the US version of the Grafton line is a fill free, well finished smooth pipe with acrylic faux cumberland fishtail mouthpiece. Peterson releases different pipes under the same model names in Europe and the US. For example, a Kildare pipe released for sale in the US is a non filter sandblast with acrylic military mount stem. The Kildare released in the EU is a smooth filter pipe with vulcanite mouthpiece. There are similar differences along several lines. Even the US and EU Sherlock Holmes pipes are different (EU released SH pipes are for filter).

If you want that exact Grafton model, with real cumberland fishtail mouthpiece, I would call and speak to Petersons and special order the pipe. Specify what you want (the US Grafton non filter pipe, but with true cumberland, no p lip, silver collar with halmarks, etc..). You could probably arrange to have your friend pick it up and bring it back, with some Peterson of Dublin swag 8)

Lovely pipe Monbla - something to really look forward to!
