Need some advice on a Ferndown.

I have the opportunity to purchase a Ferndown Millennium pipe unsmoked for 420 shipped. I love Ferndown pipes and there were only 40 of these made, but it has a saddle stem. I really prefer tapered stems on bent bulldogs. I am in talks with James Barber about getting a few Ferndowns bespoke, but not sure if Tudor or rot will be an option. Les Wood will not make a new stem for a pipe that he already made, so having one made by him is not an option. Is this overpriced as there are only 40 made?

I guess my question is what would you do? Buy it and smoke it, Buy it and not smoke it, Buy it and have an aftermarket stem made for it or dont buy it and wait till I find a tudor root or root with a tapered stem.

It's got a nice box, fancy plaque and is stamped special and has some nice straight grain. Definately a "collectable" . Question is, are YOU a COLLECTOR or a SMOKER? Put 'baccy, and a match to that pipe and you will have lost probably 1/2 your money in 'value". For that kinda money you could find one maybe even two nice Dunnies, even a new one and smoke 'em to your hearts delight. Depends on WHAT YOU WANT!! :twisted: :twisted:

I agree. It all boils down to what YOU want to do with it. Personally my pucker factor is at an 11 on any pipe over $150. So if it were me I would pass on the $420 pipe and get some cheaper smokers. I get pipes I like and am going to smoke. Not something to sit around and collect dust. I've got enough of that crap around my house.

If you want to spend that kind of money, you should look at Italian made pipes. We all agree that they are the masters when it comes to pipemaking
You can buy a nice Castello which beats any English made pipe hands down. If I were you, I would buy 3 or 4 Savinellis pipes though. Excellent smokers and then you will have more pipes.

Like someone else said, it really depends on YOU. Do you really like it that much?
Are you going to smoke it? Cause if you smoke it, it's value will then decrease a lot (if that matters).
If it's not one of your dreams pipes pass and spend the money on something you do really want.
$420 isn't really that much for a High Grade pipe, I'd say it's about middle ground as far as prices go.
Ya can't buy much of a Castello for that.

If I had that kind of scratch to blow, I'd definitely be looking at an artisan carver to make me one to my design and specs.

And that Ferndown is a very attractive pipe, nonetheless.

That's a seriously good price, relatively speaking. Yes, over $400 is pretty ouchy ($400 is $400 after all), but take a look at what standard production Ferndowns go for.

Then consider what a numbered edition Dunhill year pipe would go for. Or even a Peterson....

I am not ready to buy Italians yet. I need to finish off this set of 7 English bent bulldogs/rhodesians before i buy any italians. Well that is unless i fall in love with a Don Carlos, Castello, or Ser Jacopo.
