Greetings ladies and gents,
I smoked once, years ago and have been somewhat of a second hand smoker since.
Just started playing with pipes and smoke again.
I miss the smells, tastes and culture.
Can't let a good thing disappear.

I was cleaning a couple of estate pipes and trying to find the best solvent for very thick accumulations of tar in the stem. I had good luck just soaking the stems in a small bottle of 99% isopropyl alcohol, but one of the stems seemed to react with the alcohol and became soft. It hardened after drying and doesn't seem to be damaged.

Which stems react poorly with which solvents?

Obviously lucite and acrylics shouldn't go into a vat of acetone or metheline chloride, but what can I safely use for vulcanite?

Where is the best place to post this type of question?

Where can I find information about each of the typical stem materials?

I was considering staring a local Yahoo group for pipe smokers. My possible name would be "Mixture 626" (our area code). What part of BoB would be best to post a notice?
