Took 2 weeks to get here from Italy, 10 days of which it sat in US Customs (who knows why.....)

Stamped Dublin and London Made in Ireland 999. Can still see the machine marks inside the smoke chamber, fresh wood, untouched. The stem is all oxidized but mint, the "P" is faded from age. Not gonna smoke it just yet, gonna take it to pipe club first, 2 weeks from now.

$46

nice find. the 999 has always been a sharp looker to me.... im going to go drool over the peterson catalog some more now.

Pre republic 999, the fat boy. It's gonna need a new acrylic stem for sure. Gonna have to see how busy and backed up LL is......

4 999's in my ittle Pete collection now. The pre republic, a Flame Grain with amber acrylic stem, Kildare and Red Spigot. Think I should make it a 7 day set?

"Made in Ireland" means it is a Pre-Republic pipe which were made from 1922 till 1949 ! That's some old wood !! I have two which were bought by my father after WWII in London in 1947 and they are some GREAT smoking pipes !! I have had replacement bits made ( both were P-Lips which don't work well for me) wide fishtails and I would do the same as, as old as that bit is, you may want to have some fresh material btwn your teeth and not have to fiddle with the up-keep on old vulvanite. Amazing find !! :p

be careful.... that stuff is from... NORTHERN Ireland! If you drink Bushmills and smoke a pete at the same time, you begin to grow funny facial hair. thats what happened to kyle for his avatar pic.

Maybe if you're drinking it, definitely not if I'm drinking it

I normally don't dig the 999's from Peterson, but something, something's different about this one. I really like it. Is it that the shank is a bit more chubby? Is it that the stem is a little thicker? Maybe a combination of the two? The oxidization of the stem perhaps? I don't know what it is but it's really starting to p*ss me off!

THE FINISH! No, no that's not it. DAMMIT!

I'll have to get back to you chief. Point is I can't stop looking at it. Very very nice.

The finish on the Pete is pretty standard, but the finish on the Ardbeg is unelievable ;)

It's an old pipe, pre republic, fat shank, fat everything. A lot like those old GBD's. Definitely different from the modern 999.

Now that is a seriously nice acquisition...
Age, shape, pedigree, and it's unsmoked?
That's the way to do it!

There's enough smoke in the whisky ;)

Damn straight!

Damn PD, that's a helluva find, especially unsmoked!

Should you come across a pre republic 264, kindly let me know... :p

Wow I love the look of that pipe. Normally I like the 80 shape better than the 999 but the fat shank on that guy really looks nice. I was at the package store tonight looking for a bottle of Ardbeg, unfortunaley they didn't have any. I'm looking to expand my scotch horizons beyond Glenlivet and the Macallan.....I've heard Ardbeg is a nice heavy smoky spirit...dying to try some.

Boxer, it's not just about smoke with Ardbeg, there are plenty of smokey malts out there. Ardbeg has an amazing mineral, briny sea water, herbal intensity paired with a big peat smokiness. Laphroaig 10 year is very similar but with a little more of amedicinal/iodine nature. If you can find the Laphroaig it'll probably be about $20 cheaper than the Ardbeg. After sipping on the two side by side I prefer the Ardbeg, but the price is a stumbling point. I'm really wanting to try the Lagavulin 16 year, but that's another $20 above the Ardbeg :affraid: :x

Please don't post pictures like that any more. My missus sez I have more than enough pipes and related paraphenalia, and pics like these give me plastic fever wicked bad:) But congratulations on a beautiful find. Nothing against cigar smokers, but they just don't get to enjoy the aesthetics of their avocation as pipers do.
