I have been following a fellow that must have bought out the old Sidney P. Ram estate. Ram had a quality pipe shop in the Chicago loop through sometime in the mid-1940's. Then, he just sort of disappeared.

Now there is a guy on EBay selling new pipes with his stamp. They are going for less than the price of a bucket pipe. I am assuming they are legit. So what was the likely source for pipes in around 1946? The war just ended. English were converted back to peacetime business. A London manufacture using pre-WWII briar is looking for an outlet. Europe was still in major recovery. The only source at that point in time would have been the English. I will guess he then passed suddenly and the family couldn't sell the store so they stored inventory and recently sold the old inventory.

I've stocked up on enough for myself. Thought I'd share this with the community.

My pipes are between 4's and 5's. A billiard straight grain is quite imposing. The Lovet is on the refined side. But the wood is tight on all and the quality obvious in my eyes; although the stain understates things.

This was covered recently in another thread. Have been breaking in two of them all this week. A few more on the way. Some have fills, but it is good old wood (although the stems are way too thick). Can't go wrong for the $12-$16 per pipe I've paid for the handful I have already acquired. Fun to put first flame to such old pipes. I have a feeling, though, the the current listings will go for a bit more now that the word is out. We'll see.

Well, I've got 4 now and that should do. I did wait until I had the ones I wanted before sharing this.

You did do better than I on prices. I guess I averaged about $22. But, you can't pick up a barrel pipe in the shops for that.

@Yak As to U.S. makers, we'll never know but mine do march and salute funny.
