I thought that after smoking this NOS pipe for the past two weeks it was time to give it some "critique" ! I purchased one of the "Captain Black" Orliks that Atwagen here on the Forum had for sale and for the total price of $15.95 I must say it has been some of the BEST $s I've spent for a pipe in years !! It is a small, about a grp2 sized almost dead ringer for a Dunhill Bruyere finish #501 pot from the '60s I've ever seen! I've been breaking it in with st. va's so far and you'ld think it had been smoked for years !! It came with a stinger, which came out easily, has a clean, smooth, even draw, a small sized u-shaped bowl chamber w/thick walls and a nice thin, fishtail ebonite tapered bit.
I have a friend who is a confirmed Dunhill smoker ( both 'bac and pipes) and I met him this past wednesday night at the B&M and he thought I had gotten a replacement stem on my "Dunhill" when he saw it in my mouth when I came into the shop! It is a definate dead ringer for a Dunhill grp2 pot from the same era when this pipe was made, the 1960's when Orliks were pr-Codagan and made in England! It has some nice straight grain and so far, no evidence of any fills in it (though I'm sure it does as it was not an expensive pipe back then I'm sure ) and the workmanship is on a par with many of the other British pipes of that same period that I have bought over the years. I just finished it's first bowl of an "English" blend and it was great !! I would recomend it to any BoB's wanting a nice, good smoking traditionaly shaped British pipe that is sized right for a nice short smoke !! :p Here's his pics of it:

Great looking Pipe, Monbla. I can say that I was looking at them too - he has 4 left...

Anyway - when are you going to smoke a bowl of Captain Black in it?

I love restoring old classic pipes such as this one. Congrats on a terrific addition!

Thanks for the review. That's just my kind of pipe.

Now I'm pacing the room wanting to pull the trigger on one. She'll kill me if I buy another pipe.... What to do? What to do?

Good review Monbla. Thanks for the input.
Nice snag BTW!!

I'm afraid it will NEVER see a bowl of CB in it  But it will see lots of Balkan and Va 'bac for sure :p

Gorgeous!

Pre-consolidation, branded Orliks are already shockingly undervalued for fine, classic Brit pipes. Small wonder that even a "giveaway" line of that era smokes like a Dunny for the square root of the price.

Thanks brother. I've sent them an email, asking whether they would be so kind as to ship to South Africa

Just get the pipe and when it arrives you have two choices:

1. If she see's the package, tell her it's a pipe you've had for years that you sent off for stem repair.

2. If she doesn't see the package, just blend it in with all the others. She'll never notice. If she does, just tell her you've had that old thing for years but just don't smoke it very often.

Hope this helps, Brother!

You work. You pay your bills. You don't complain about what she buy's right? Get it and smoke it. Easy :p

What does NOS stand for please?

Only thing I can think of is "Never On Sundays"

My favorites are:

New Old Stock

New Orleans Saints
Notice of Sale
Naval Ordnance Station
NATO Office of Security
No One Survives
Night Observation System
Nuke On Sight
Non-Organic Substance
Naval Observatory Station

Yeah Yeah, I know - always a Smart-Ass in the group. :lol!:

I was really looking forward to receiving this pipe.

But it seems as if I've lost contact with the seller. I've sent 3 mails, confirming my order, but did not receive any response. :?:

Sometimes referred to by "tuners" (or ricers) as "NOS," or "nitrous oxide." The gas they stuff in their 4-banger econo box grocery runner engines to pretend they're drag racers, you know, before their fart mufflers start passing smoke because they blew the rings, ruining the car (and trying to sell it for triple the price on Craigslist to some other idiot).

I'm feeling very Andy Rooney today. :\
