Just thought i would share some pics of my new Sherlock Holmes Squire pipe. It is in the Red stain that not a lot of Sherlock Holmes pipes are made with. One pic has flash and one doesn't.

Splendid! Really nice. Hope it smokes well for you. Isn't that the 80S?

Can't go wrong with a good Pete!

Nice one !! The 80S has a saddle bit/ The S indicates a saddle bit !!

The 80 and 80s are a fair amount smaller. This is about a group 5 in size and peterson shape XL15.

Now that's a real looker there! Enjoy it in rude good health!

Not very familiar with Pete's, but I would not call that a saddle bit (stem).

Good looking pipe though.

Does Peterson still stain the inside of the bowl?

My 80s has got a stem like the pipe in this picture.

The "S" is for "sukkel" (battle) to get rid of the dye inside the bowl.  Took me the best part of 6 months to get my Petes to smoke like a pipe should do. But once they started to deliver, they made up for all the "sukkel". Excellent smokers, both the 150 and 80s

I have a Squire and it's one of my favorite pipes. And yes, it is quite a bit larger than the 80 or 150. Has a nice feel and heft to it, yet tucks easily into a pocket. Another winner in bulldog form.

They had a discussion about the 's' in Pete's nomenclature over on the IPPC site a few years ago and from what I read and what Peterson answered when questioned about it was that the 's' was an indicater of a SADDLE BIT either P=Lipped or Fistail. But Peterson is famous for manufacturing inconsistancy and I've seen 's' marked pipes with tapered bits and ones not marked with the 's' with saddle bits. Guess it depends on the number of pints the workers have at lunch on any given day. same goes with thier famous bowl coating, some in a series coated, some are'nt. Aaaah the Irish, ya gotta love 'em

Interesting.

I have an 80S that has that exact stem pictured above, which was why I asked about it earlier. It's clearly not a saddle stem, but is a fishtail.

So tarheel, did the bowl come with a coating? I'm guessing it did.
