Have any of you guys ever owned a "Tabago", or any other Norwegian made pipe ?

I recently found some additional Family history, and its pretty strong on the Norwegian side. All the way back to Molde Norway , in the 1800's.

So, of course i want a Norwegian made pipe now. But the Tabago's are all I can find.

Just curious, if they are worth the money? are they quality etc etc

I'm yer man Dusty. My Mom was Norwegian by descent...her folks came over on the boat and operated an 80 acre dairy farm in Northern Minnesota, which the elder brother of 9 kids took over (the classic "Norwegian Bachelor Farmer")...let's see...my mother was Helga and then there was Aksel, Ehrling and Norman, and then Gudrun, Henrietta, Nora, Jenny and Agnes. Talk about NORWEGIAN! When I was growing up my folks had some friends...the Hagerauds. The husband, Jan and wife would come over frequently after church on Sundays to visit (I guess they did that kind of thing back then). He spoke fluent Norwegian, as did my mother, and they used to go back and forth for a couple of hours, just to keep it in practice I guess.

Anyway, about the pipes. I've occasionally seen pipes made in Norway...tied to the name LILLEHAMMER (you know, where they had the Olympics one year). I see them most often at "Smoking Pipes" in the estate section under "Misc." or something.

And certainly, like many things made in Norway they are the product of sound engineering, exceptional craftsmanship and ho-hum design. LOL

You'll find them on Smoking Pipes now and again under Estate Pipes...Misc.

Following are a few links to get you started.

I don't know if they will do this, but some vendors will email you if a certain design or whatever comes in. You might email Smoking Pipes and ask them to be alerted when another Lillehammer pipes comes in. You never know.

Good Luck.

Blackhorse,

Pipedia stated that Lillehammer pipes , were made in Lillehammer, but Sometime after WWII the Larsen factory closed down and the production was taken over by Stanwell, who still makes a line of pipes under the Lillehammer name.

Hmm ? I will keep looking.
Thanks for the links , I'll check them out after this.

Minnesota eh? Thats where my family ended up too.. Both sides, the Irish and the Norwegian. back at the turn of the century.

small world !

I didn't know that Stanwell had taken them over...but I've seen Lillehammer pipes listed as true Lillehammer's with the date 1947 listed...so maybe prior to then they might be safe. If there's one that show's up on Smoking Pipes, perhaps a call to them would yield specific information as to dates, etc.

Good luck.

Måtte kraften være med deg.

I can't say enough about the quality and value attached to the Made in Norway Lillehammer pipes. To my knowledge they are not currently being produced by anyone. I own 12 and they are a fantastic value; great smokers, no fills (in the G.L. lines) and well crafted. I have a few others that are "Made in Norway" but may have been Lillehammer seconds, (Mensa, Navigator) since they are a huge step down in quality from the real McCoy.

This sleeper brand deserves wider recognition. Now I went and done it!!!

To my knowledge, Tabago is the only current pipe maker hailing from that beautiful land of majestic fjords.

Lou

...and on a different note, my cat is Norwegian (Norwegian Forest Cat)! His name is Gunnar. Not only did that land produce beautiful pipes but the forests of Norway contained beautiful felines as well!

Lou

Yep Yep, Ive been looking at the Tobagos, but I just havent heard of how good they are..

The Larson made lillehammer would be Cool.. I may just have to sit back and wait for one to pop up some day.

Oh yeah, heres a pic of a clients "Norwegian Fjord", his name is Cristopher Robin, and he has a REAL job, she uses him and a few others , for the "Butte Special Riders" (its cool, these horses seem to be perfect for it)

Hey skaukatt,, thanks for the input, I think I will wait to get my hands on a true Lillehammer..

an estate would even do,,, so , ya know,, if you ever get to where you dont have a spot in your pipe rack for one of them ,, you just let me know. :D

I meant Commander not Navigator. BTW, I have a Kriswill that is from the Norwegian ownership period. It is stamped Made in Norway and is a Kriswill Count.

Will do, Dusty! It took me a long time to find them. I have a real soft spot in my heart for all things Norwegian especially after falling in love with that breed of cat, being a rabid Minnesota Vikings fan (living in NYC, no less) and the desire to visit that beautiful land.

Lillehammer's show up now and then on ebay and Tony Soderman of MN. (mr.can of ebay) sells many of them since he gets a big call for them from his Scandinavian constituents so he seeks them out quite frequently.

Be patient and they will come along.

Lou

OH! And BTW, I have a single tin of Norwegian pipe tobacco...supposedly from Norway, but information on it is very sparse.

It's Sorensen Flake. tin info: Front: est. in 1905 Bergen, Norway. Made in EU. Back: Roykind nedsetter levealderen (Smoking reduces life expectancy).

(You might want to make a few notes off his comments as he gave some local info.)

Also...PM sent.

dang skaukatt, Thanks for all the help.
and you too Blackhorse, I got your PM, and looked into it.

Kriswill hmmm?? nice , Im going to look around for that one too

Pretty entertaining clip there Blackhorse !
Definitely looking in to what he said, and what was on his screen

I had to look up "Norwegian Forest Cats." Glad I did--learned something about a pretty kitty. 8)

Just now finally got the connection with your screen name, Lou.

Duh . . .

The male we took in is one fine cat indeed. Lived outside for four years on his own & none the worse for wear (except one tiny ear nick, and I suspect the other cat got the worse of the encounter).

Gentle giant kitty. Mellow & affectionate.

But a terror to dogs. :lol!:
