Nosewarmers: Good smoke?

I think nosewarmers are a good smoke, but admit I have not always thought so. For a long time, I would not buy short pipes under the presumption they would smoke hot. I now have several "short" pipes, nosewarmers and others just longer, and have found that is just not the case. I think some of it is just in the mind. I have read the average pipe tobacco burns at around 767 degrees F. How much cooler do you think the additional one to one and a half inch to a "normal" sized pipe is going to make at that temp.? I think not much.

Most commonly the reference to nosewarmers is made with reference to a bowl on a short stem that is located near to under one's nostrils. The idea is for the smoke from the bowl to rise and "tickle" the nostrils. Smoking these pipes affords the smoker the opportunity to enjoy a somewhat "fuller" taste experience. Nosewarmer pipes are also generally smaller in size and great for just throwing in your pocket. I love the largest oom paul pipes and they too are, in jest, referred to as nosewarmers. The fact of the matter is that my oom paul bowl is attached to a rather long fully bent stem and it is far South of my nose, but in the same vertical plane. Smoke wafting up from an oom paul bowl hugs the face and readily enters one's nostrils for an equally satisfying and tasteful smoking experience. IMHO every guy ought to have at least one oom paul pipe in a collection. They are large providing a long smoke, they are very comfortable to clench because they literally hang, and they are quintessential in appearance. You will get your share of attention when out and about with one.

The idea of an oom-paul, as you have described it, is intriguing. There was a wonderful oom-paul I saw years ago that absolutely dripped with bird's-eye, heel to shank. It was obviously made from an awesome piece of wood. The shape was perfection, but I didn't buy it, probably because I was still sane in those years and hadn't yet succumbed to PAD. The trouble is that I have that image in mind when I think of an oom-paul. Every one I've ever seen since doesn't quite measure up in one way or another--but there's always tomorrow. As far as "shorties" go, I think I'll pass for now.

I love my nosewarmer. Huge bowl with a nice short stem. I don't think it burns hot at all. It is a good smoking pipe. I don't find the smoke irritating to the nose or eyes at all. I think how you smoke is more of a factor in a hot burning tobacco than the type of pipe you are smoking.

I regularly reach for pipes that are shorter than 5", and I don't think they smoke any hotter than long pipes, but I agree with cigarstorejay, it's about how you smoke them.

Marty brings up points of exactly why I doubt I'll ever have a nosewarmer or Uncle Paul in my in my collection: I've never liked smoke in my face. Even when I was a cigarette smoker, when it seemed others of my kind back then could tolerate being downwind of a raging wildfire and not care, I'd get pissy if someone left a cig carelessly burning and whisping into my face at a table.

My intent while smoking a pipe is to redirect and prevent inhalation of smoke as much as possible. I like smoke, but I don't like smoke. Probably kind of a weird concept to most.

So that's the secret. Perfect for vitamin N.

Chemical-doused cigarettes stink. They stink in the box. They taste like ****. The smoke smells awful at the time and later. Makes perfect sense to me to not like it floating by, and hovering around, your face. I'd love to know what cigarettes of the 40s and 50s smelled like in the box and in the air. I assume like a nice Danish shag or like the Turkish ovals of not that long ago.

I quite enjoy strong English blends smacking me in the face, but heavy Virginias and VaPers have to catch me in just the right mood. Otherwise, I'd like to be smoke-free. Irritates my eyes more than it probably does my sense of smell. Extremely short pipes bother my eyes. That's the thing I like less about them.

I've only got one pipe that would qualify as a nose warmer but it doesn't even come close to smoking hot. I think a lot of the guys got it right when they say it's how you smoke the pipe that counts. My little guy is actually one of my absolute favorite pipes and one of my best smokers.

Prince Albert is a universal tobacco that can be rolled into a cigarette as well as stuffed in a pipe. It rolls quite well and a lot of people rolled it into cigs back in the day and some still do it today. It's stronger than counter cigarettes but the taste and aroma is pleasant. Also way cheaper as it doesn't get taxed like cigs.

I love nosewarmers, but I don't clench them continously, so smoke in my face isn't an issue for me. They seem to deliver a richer smoke, and I like the balance of the pipe in my mouth.

If you are a huffer and tend to smoke your pipes continously and hot, you may find the nosewarmer a challenge to enjoy.

I call him "Mr. Bond" for obvious reasons :p
My only true nosewarmer so far, but I love it! Love the look of that Il Duca Bub! I just had a commission from Chris Askwith that I'll post up once it arrives, but my next from him may just have to be one of his awesome nosewarmers.

Perhaps as much as one-third of my pipe collection is nosed-warmers. I do not clench and enjoy them but not to the exclusion of more normal briars (limit about six inches if bowl is not too heavy).

This is one of my biggest issues. I both enjoy and dislike the smoke.

I have a nice little nose warmer, is a great little pipe for walk.
