Firstly, I love this forum.

I'm not a forum or social media type of person. I have studied this forum in depth and don't plan on asking too many questions- for now, preferring to read, listen and maybe occasionally comment, when the time is right.

I have been a friend of nicotine for a number of years. Quitting smoking about two years ago. I wasn't a heavy smoker. 10-12 cigarettes a day. I've been off them for almost two years now.

Pipe poking intrigues me- for many reasons. And (even though it may not be correct to start a sentence with AND) I have been wondering if, perhaps, I should pick up the habit- If it should, correctly, be referred to that, as such?

Should I be worried about the sweet Lady N., as she is so commonly referred to as- the evil, yet lovely (bitch) lady that she is???

To follow up: I've purchased a couple of cobs and a few choice selections of tobacco. I'm currently 1 bowl deep into breaking in each of my cobs.

Where should I go from here?

Now you've got me intrigued.

Call it whatever you want. For some it is a habit, for others a liberator. For all it is somewhat of a hobby. You're free to call it and partake in it as you see fit.

That is up to you. Someone who previously smoked cigarettes could address this better than I.

If you are interested in blends, check out the suggested blends sticky. If you are interested in techniques, check out the appropriate sub forum or YouTube.

Welcome!

Sounds as though you have decided.

In a year you'll have a collection of tobacco that smells great and taste like dried hickory leaves.

And 14 pipes that caught your eye. 8) Most of those will be large bowl bents. 8)

If your married you will have a short courtship with latakia. 8)

Then you'll be after medium sized Dunhills and a 100% Virginia Flake 8)

You will gain many new friends here at the BoB and you will meet Kyle. 8)

At that point you may decide that suicide is painless. 8)

STAY WITH THE COBS UNTIL YOU GET PAST THE AROMATIC STAGE 8)

Welcome

Bill

I'm intrigued too...the act itself, among the many reasons...

...pictures? :bball:

Off to the Rubber Room...

(...welcome...)

:cyclops: Like you, I smoked for more years than I like to think about, but I finally kicked the habit 2 or 3 years ago. Along came pipes last Feb. So to make a long story less long, 11 months, 28 pipes and several $100 of tobacco later, here I am. I really enjoy smoking my pipes, but have NO desire for cigarettes and if I have to go without a pipe for a day or two, no big deal. Welcome - enjoy.

Your goal of becoming an "Elitist" is to be commended  Not many folks would admit to that here. But you are going about it all wrong!
First, get rid of the cobs as they are not appropriate for the image of an "Elitist" Begin collecting ONLY Dunhill Root Briar grp 6 or ODA sized Bulldogs or Rhodesians, older is better and get at least a dozen for a good start. Your goal should be around 200 of these. They are priced correctly for an "Elitiste" at around $1,000.00 ea.
Next, Make monthly trips to England, the Lake district precisely, and buy directly from the two major blenders in multiple pound quantities, the most unavailable blends they make which you can't buy here and pay full retail and all import duties and taxes imposed by both countries (US and GB) . Cost is no object for a true "Elitist"
As far as Lady N goes, being a lite cig smoker, ( try 3 PACKS a day as a true cig smoker with the "habit" smokes) you really have not met her. But that's OK, as with the Brit 'bacs you will be smoking, she'll come to meet you
Next have all your pipes cleaned and maintained on a weekly basis by one of the pipe restorers available here in the US. (that's why you will need at least 200 pipes to allow for pipes being worked on vs smoked)
And lastly ( there's that AND again  ), since you will be doing this as an "Elitist" HOBBY, only do this all for 2 years at the most, as it's just a HOBBY and if you are a true "ELITIST" you have will be bored after this length of time.
Now, if you'd like to join the ranks of "smokers" disregard all of the above and hang around here, try different stuf, make mistakes but all the while, try and get ENJOYMENT from it! But please, take THAT word out of your vocabulary if you want to be a BoB  Opinionated is common, "Elitist" is dumb

This man knows what he's talking about.

Proceed accordingly.

And happy landings :D

If you smoke pipes because you like doing smoking pipes, fine. 8)

If you're doing it because it makes some kind of "fashion statement," meh . . .

If you turn buying-wanting pipes & tobaccos into an obsession (a very popular option in recent years), you've got a lot of company, but it gets expensive.

If you just want to hang out, also fine if you can manage to not take umbrage at stuff people (some of whom end up here because they don't fit well into other pipe-oriented places) post.

People get too concerned over doing things for reasons.

It doesn't work that way.

De gustibus non disputandem.

If you like smoking pipes, pineapple sherbert, college football or cats, you just like those things. Reason only comes into the picture after the fact, to rationalise a response that has no more to do with "rational" thought than our cats' individual preferences for certain flavors of kitty treats or table scraps do.

Welcome to the zoo.

You'll find that over time pipe smoking builds confidence, and eventually you won't second guess what you should / should not be doing. You'll ask questions and welcome responses, though you'll take them with a grain of salt. You may give advice of your own, though without expectation that anyone feels obligated to follow it. It's all pretty cool when it's done right ;)

Hey Jack, I hope you stick around, this place is more fun than it looks. Mostly.

Thank you all for your continued responses! All of the above just confirms what a great forum this is.

Opinionated is common, "Elitist" is dumb
I couldn't agree with you more. There's enough elitist a**holes in the world without me joining the ranks!

I'm sorry, I didn't mean to imply that I plan on trying to become an elitist- although, thanks to one of the above responses, I now know what a real pipe smoking elitist is. :)

Actually, one of the reasons I've become fond of this forum is because of the shortage of uppity, arrogant individuals. Mostly everyone seems to be incredibly grounded and totally open minded (and friendly) especially towards new members and/ or new smokers.

You folks really make learning this great new hobby.......easy and accessible.

Thanks again!

Oh, and Kyle,
Thanks for the welcome
