Now today sucks too!

Working remotely it's not unusual to not hear from anyone for several days or even a couple of weeks. I just found out that my previous boss for over 16 years just got laid off Thursday morning along with 4 of his direct reports. He had been with the company nearly 30 years and he's only 50 years old. I'm in shock because everyone likes him.

I expect to get laid off soon and I'm not too concerned about it. I think the company is going down the toilet.

I should add that I'm keeping my fingers crossed that I'll get laid off soon with a year of salary as severance. If I do that will be a great day!

Same thing happened to me in 2009. I hadn't been with the company that long but because of my background and expertise in my profession I was hired in at a rate significantly higher than anyone else making me the highest paid in the dept. When the economy went down the tubes in 08 and we parked half our a/c. I saw the writing on the wall. The HR manager was particularly po'd because I made more than him. I negotiated a lay off. Got 3 months severance, Cobra insurance for 18 months, and max unemployment for 18 months, a CA thing. Was a blessing in disguise. I worked contract for 3 years, on my schedule, then pulled the plug and went on SS at 64. Because of my 6+ salary I had banked enough to live comfortably and never looked back. I would have kept working because I loved my job, but all in all can't complain. Best of luck to you DW, hope it all works out for you.

Business educated people like to say that money isn't an incentive. I heard that crap for years where I retired from. Yet, examples of people being pissed about someone else's salary is a common story. Money does matter to many people, even if the Pearson manuals and academics say otherwise.

For the years I worked for Southwestern Bell Telephone HQ they told us that money isn't a motivator. Then all of a sudden they said it was an incentive. What's an incentive? Something that motivates! I swear that some of the dumbest professionals I've met are in HR.

Yep, I'm truly not concerned about my job. I think it's a sure thing that I'm going to lose it but with the severance package I'm looking forward to it. My plan was to work until I'm 70. If I get that severance I'll be getting paid until I reach 69. Close enough!

Yep, that's 100 percent ********, what the hell do they think I'm working for? Feeling good helping people? Well that is part of it but I'm mostly in it for the coin.
