Hey guys, I was wondering if any of you Dun-o-philes out there might tell me what the "3" between the date and the group size means?
I vaguely recall the alternative stamp next to the date might have something to do with the factory warranty, but I'm not certain. Any help would be much appreciated.
If you're on Smokers Forums (or know somebody who is), ask LL (aka George Dibos).
He's on top of Dunhill nomenclature.
You could e-mail him directly, but his g-mail is really buggy -- messages to him just
disappear into cyberspace sometimes. People think he's ignoring them. He isn't.
Looks kinda like a double date stamp to me. I have one too. Usually though the second number is a little closer to the first.
As I am aware there can be several reasons for this. First, the pipe was started in 1962 and finished in 63. Another possibility is that it was returned to Dunhill for some reason. When Dunhill sends the pipe out again they stamped another date code to indicate that it had been returned to the factory.
As far as I know this information is accurate, but I would love to hear from an expert.
The small 2 and 3 would indicate the year was 1952 or 3. I did not know they would double stamp them. Always learning something new. That makes hanging out on the forums worth doing.
My understanding is that Dunhill stopped using patent numbers in 1955 - since the first digit is a 2 and there is no patent number, I think this one is a 1962 - and the second digit means it was finished in (or remained in the factory until) 1963.
