Opinons on the Comoy's Everyman

So I've been listening to a lot of talk about how excellent the old English pipes were, so on a whim I picked up an old Comoy's Everyman for about $5.50. I figured it was a pretty low risk investment. I'm in the process of cleaning her up now.

What do you guys think of the old Comoy's seconds?

well, Guildhall and Everyman weren't seconds, but they were at the very bottom of the Comoy's proper series. Here's my $.02 as a Comoy's collector:

These two lines have fills and inferior grain. The stems are worse than average molded stems, which is all the more damning because Comoy's hand cut stems are about as good as it gets.

Those issues aside, these pipes bring the exact same shapes that made Comoy's pipes great to the table. I didn't keep any of mine after I started buying Traditions and London Prides, but Guildhalls and Everyman pipes are a great value and provide a cheap entrance into Comoy's pipes.

I've got an old Drury Lane apple that scores 100/100 as a smoker.

Handcut stem !

$5.00 as I recall.

yep he has a point there. The molded stems didn't start til some time in the 60s. If you get an early enough pipe, it may have a really great stem on it.

Being that you're a pipe maker, you should have no problem fashioning a very good replacement stem for it

I'm relatively sure that the stem is a pre-fab, but still very thin and comfortable with a wide open draw. It's actually got some nice grain, but also has about 6 pin sized fills.

The only thing I can find to date the pipe is the made in :London England stamp in a circle. According to Pipedia that means it was produced later than 1950. Not much help.

A couple years ago I sold two very nice Guildhalls. No discernable fills that I could find; my only complaint with them was that they were too small. Nicely finished and decent smokers; I certainly wouldn't be afraid of either a Guildhall or an Everyman if you find one you like.
