As we are in love with pipe smoking, it of course comes as no surprise that acquiring pipes, very usually the most expensive part of that affection, becomes more than just an enduring past-time; for me, that acquisitive bent is not substantively different than my yen for, say, audio equipment, computer equipment or cigars.

But I think two things mitigate against categorizing pipes with other desired consumer objects. One, there are few objects that are so personally satisfying as a pipe. We stick them in our mouths and massage the tobacco smoke with our lips for an optimal tobacco experience. Two, we bring our esthetic sense to pipe selection, whether that is unstudied or the product of years of ever-refined perception.

How can anyone argue with that? :)

Pipe collecting and smoking is interaction with art. It is extremely personal, invigorating and exciting--while still being relaxing. If you further this with specific carving artists or estate pipe history that you particularly enjoy, it only furthers the experience! It's all right there in your hand, right in your face.

Though, I can say listening to said audio equipment and enjoying a perfectly-paired adult beverage while pipe smoking really adds some extra layers of enjoyment--even if the pipe is the root cause of your personal leisure. 8)

I think Ill sit back with my pipe full, light up, and think on this a while. It is a good day ;)

Go Jet's, I mean lets take a smoke, relax and think about it.

It's a similar feeling I get when playing a guitar, since you actually "wear" a guitar around your neck. The interaction is physical, and you feel every pound of that instrument after a while. And maybe more than any other instrument, the guitar can be specifically tailored to reflect the player's aesthetics.
Much like a pipe is bought to reflect the smoker's style.

Thought provoking post, Mr. Buscatti, thanks!

Music is like this, yes. After programming some of my more "buttony" synthesizers of the days of yore, you sort of get that feeling, but usually frustration ensues because you lose your programming edge. So yeah, guitar is probably more relaxing by far. 8) I'd much rather be smoking a pipe and playing my analogs, but then again, no smoke enters the studio, ever, ever, ever, ever... :p
