can anyone tell me if the peterson aran pipe is any good. going to pick one out tommorow and am worried if ti is any good
i need some responses from owners of peterson pipes or an aran peterson pipe owener or a general review of these pipes.

i dont personally own a peterson, but they have a very good reputation for the price. Most of them smoke well

The one I owned (268) was small and had a p-lip, which I learned I don't like. The pipe was built nicely for the price point, no quality quibbles. I tried another p-lip before confirming they weren't for me. Some Petes are available in fish-tail, I can't recall if this was an option on the Aran line.

I own four Peterson's (one has a P-lip) and they're all fantastic pipes. They smoke as well as any other pipe I have. While pipes are largely a matter of individual taste, I don't think you can go wrong with a Peterson. Good luck and good smoking!

I´ve had a couple. They are good mid grade pipes and mine were good smokers despite arduous break in process. My experience with the Petersons are that they take a good while to break in. They are dip stained which gets the inside the bowl and will impart an odd flavor at first. They also have precarb in the bowl which I like to scrape/sand away. Even after that it took a long time to get the "new" out. If you´re willing to deal with that, I´d say go for it. All made it to "the other side" just fine.

BTW one of my favorite pipes is a Donegal Rocky 264. Its the same grade level as an Aran, only rusticated. Despite being misdrilled and the long break in it´s one of my favorite pipes today.

That is a one plus on the Aran line, the bowls are not coated. Mine broke-in quite fast. (2nd one was a used board swap)

As mentioned, very long break in period which can make for an unpleasant smoking experience.

To make the break in period shorter and easier, I wipe out all the goo inside the bowl. I do it by using 100% pure alcohol and papertowl. Keep on grinding the inside with alcohol drenched papertowel until you can see the raw briar. Let the pipe dry out for a few hours, than apply full creme cherry or othe fortified wine sparingly inside the bowl and smoke. Do not smoke the pipe straight form the dealer.

I've broken in a Donegal Rocky 80s now within a few smokes, took about 4 days and the pipe smokes like dream.

THey are excellent pipes for the price and very good looking. Go for it!!!

Fantastic idea SpeedyPete!! Didn't think of that so I started on a Rosslare that I smoked once and relegated to a corner since I couldn't bear to put up with the break in. After about 15 mins I think I'm about halfway done. Its very apparent that they dip the whole pipe in die and whatever other crap they use on the bowl hence the horrendous break in period. With all that garbage between the briar and tobacco no wonder these guys don't smoke well. I'm excited to get my Petes cleaned up since their shapes really are quite wonderful.

I am happy with my Peterson but had the same stain issue which I resolved by cleaning out the inside of the bowl with alcohol to remove the stain.

They seem like a good reliable smoke for the price.

Again, the Aran line has no inner bowl stain or coating to remove or worry with. A cake started building in mine almost immediately.

I guess we should clarify terms. The Aran line bowls are not supposed to be dip-stained, but do have the carbon pre-coating. That was my experience.

I have a few Peterson Pipes I got online and enjoy each one. I have two Arans and one Rosslare Classic. Both my Aran's are not the P-Lip. I tried the P-Lip once and didn't care for it. It did take a few smokes to get the "bad taste" out of the bowl. I'm not sure what is in it, but it does taste bad for the first few smokes. I tried to research a way to get around it and didn't see a lot of good ideas so I just smoked it.

Here is my latest one:

I only have two "new" ( less than 4 years old ) Pete's, bought in the last two years and have NO difficulties with either finish or breaking in. One is my Rosslare 999 and the other is a River series. Both were + $100.00 pipes so I can't speak for the lower priced lines, but the System pipes I have recently seen look to be just fine. All my other Pete's are over 30+ years old and I bought all ( except the two pre-republics which my father bought new in '46) new back in the '70s/early '80s. I think much of these "problems" with current Pete's are an individual pipe thing and not something product wise across the board. Just my two cents/experience worth :p

I just wiped the coating from my bowls with alcohol and a cloth. That worked fine and no funky break in taste.

I own 3 Peterson pipes - two of them, the 03 and 221, are available in the Aran range. The 03 has a 'p' lip and the 221 a fishtail. I find both excellent although as I'm relatively new to pipe smoking I sometimes found myself looking forward to days when it was the 03's turn for smoking - I found the 'p' lip very forgiving on my tounge if I was suffering from tounge bite.

I'd recommend either - its really a matter of which Aran pipe puts a bigger smile on your face.
