I have very sensitive tongue and need to use filters. Where do I buy filters that will fit in my normal size pipes (Dunhill, Ascorbic, etc.). I know the KIND I want but can't find any small enough. I feel I'm missing something here.

Are those pipe stems drilled to accept a filter? The Savinelli balsa filters may be cut down enough for you to fit one as long as it does not get stuck. Another option is the other filters by Nording called Keystone Filters that go inside the bowl.

I think most pipes have p to be designed and made to accept a filter, which are specific as to brand, etc. If a pipe wasn’t intended to use a filter then trying to put one in will only totally screw up the air flow, etc. There are also some generic filters out there as well. Other members here are likely more knowledgeable than I am.

How long have you been smoking a pipe? If you're new to it you may not have an especially sensitive tongue but you might be experiencing tongue bite. There are things you can do to reduce tongue bite.

Welcome to the Brothers. I have a very sensitive tongue and have had better luck choosing friendly tobaccos than using filters (unless a pipe has a wide open draw such as a M M Cob.)

Yeah…all in all I don’t think a filter will solve the issues surrounding being sensitive. The tongue bite thing isn’t totally a function of how fast and therefore how “hot” (as in temperature) you puff. It’s more a product of some tobaccos producing chemically extreme “base” smoke (as in acid vs base…you know, like lye) when they burn in your pipe. Then when you puff that smoke is concentrated and “hot blasted” right onto your tongue producing a chemical burn.

I find that some pipes direct the airflow more directly on the tongue, or the fluid dynamics of that particular pipe design, or construction, concentrate the smoke. I have a new pipe to me that I'm battling with a little bit in this regard. It's a basic straight pipe, but there's something about the construction of the airway that causes it to give me tongue bite more often than not. It's also from a maker with which I have a lot of experience. It's not common for their pipes to smoke like this. I have to barely draw to avoid the bite. So much so that it is unnatural in how I have to smoke it. I love the look and feel of the pipe, but it's an arduous smoker. I've never had another pipe like this. I've got tongue bite like the rest of us have, but never have I been so convinced it is entirely because of the construction of the pipe. Do you like the pipe enough to have to baby it with every puff?

If your pipe stem will except filters you first need to know the size you need. Most filters are either 6mm or 9mm. Once you know that any online pipe and tobacco store sells them. The most popular I would say are Dr. Grabow and Medico. If you want balsa wood filters Savenellie sells both sizes but there are many others. Dunhill, big Ben, white Elephant and as mentioned above Nording keystones which is what I use. They work great. You just pour 10 or so in the bowl then place your tobacco. You can also add more of them which makes the bowl size smaller so if you want to smoke a certain pipe but it has a large bowl and you don't want to smoke that much they take up space at the bottom so you use less tobacco thus a shorter smoke.

Have you ever tried a P Lip bit. You mostly find them on Peterson pipes and some Grabow pipes like the Omega. A P Lip tip sends the smoke to the roof of your mouth and circulate around in your mouth as a standard bit shoots the smoke on your tongue. I love my P Lips. You may to!

I just watched a very good YouTube video from the Pipe Nook where Eddie goes over all kinds of filters. Might be worth watching, as he had tongue bite issues also, and said he got the most help from charcoal filters.

I'm answering my own question cause in reviewing it again I see how dumb it was. I wrote it.before ever trying to use a pipe filter of any kind. I didn't know that.to use the standard 6mm and 9mm I've found, your pipe must be made to hold them.from.the beginning. You can't buy a filter to fit in a pipe that was not made to hold filters. Sounds so simple, but live and learn and probably embarrass yourself in the meantime.
