Hi brothers,

I'm looking for a great beginners pipe. I've been using my corn cob for a few weeks now, and I'm ready to transition into a briar.

Can I buy a good one between $25 - $35 or do I just have to spend more?

Im new to pipes too.I bought a savinelli baronet bruyere 320 xl for @ 60 at cupojoes and I love it. Also love my miss. meer. freehand too @ 35 good luck man

Welcome aboard!

There are still some deals to be had for estate (used) pipes from reputable brands, like Stanwell and Peterson.

For new pipes you will likely have to think in the 50-100 range, but look around--little deals can be found here and there.

Ditto Doc,
Welcome to BOB!

Welcome to BoB.

Nothing wrong with sticking with cobs until you are fully convinced that pipe smoking is for you. Cobs smoke great and really let you fully taste the tobacco, helping you decide what you like in that department as well. Of course, nothing like the pride of ownership of a nice new briar to build your enthusiasm for your new hobby.

As usual, DocM is spot on suggesting Stanwell and Peterson as good starter pipes. Their bottom line pipes pretty much smoke as well as the better grades, you just don't get as nice grain or finish. Check all the online retailers, every once in a while they have specials. Iwan Ries usually has quite a few pipes on at really good prices in their discount section. JR Cigars also sells pipes online at big discounts from time to time. I dunno if I would suggest an estate for a first pipe unless you get one that has already been refurbished, maybe it is just me but I remember the first time I got a heavily smoked estate, even after cleaning it up it took me a while to actually stick it in my mouth and smoke it. If you buy an estate from a retailer, it should be already cleaned up and probably hard to tell it was ever used. I would stay away from "basket pipes" that you will find at the local B&M, they are cheap but usually for a reason, I would prefer to smoke a cob anytime over most of what I have seen there.

Welcome!

Moderately priced pipes are found easily. In addition to Stanwell and Peterson, Savinelli has a HUGE range of good pipes at reasonable prices.

One of my first pipes ever was a Savinelli Oscar that I got in 1989, or thereabouts. It is a superb smoker and every bit as good as any of the higher end collector pipes in my collection. It is one of my favorites to this day!

Guys, thank you so much for your thoughts. I've felt thoroughly welcomed here. I found a guy on ebay that refurbishes estate pipes. His name is Irishlefty. I think I'll be giving one of his a try.

Stanwell and Savinelli are person favorites on the lower end. Joh's also has some nice pipes that are very affordable, but they tend to be a bit pricier.

Howdy Aaron and welcome to BoB!
Good bunch of fellas to chat with around here. Some of them are purdy smart too, others well... (don't read about ...It's Friday what have I learned, kiwi, post, or the ear wax thing) :suspect:
But hey I bought a Britannia a few months back for around $40 and it smokes great. In fact it's darn near become a favoite. Might give them a look at Pipesandcigars.com

Welcome aboard!
I smoke one of my cobs everyday (not the same one, I have a variety of cobs).
Nothing wrong with having briars or meershams either.
hope you enjoy whatever you smoke and smoke whatever you enjoy.
