Pipe Reviews?

Another question Brothers,

Is there a web page dedicated to pipe reviews in the same or similar format as TobaccoReviews.com? Would a sight dedicated to pipes be of interest or help to anyone? Seems like it would take quite a bit of work and time to set up such a site but no more than it took to set up a sight for reviewing tobacco. Just wondering...

There have been a multitude of attempts at such a thing... Never has taken hold before. When all the hub bub is removed pipes aren't reviewable past individual specimen. You can hit on generality such as "all Savinelli buttons are large" or "Boswell barstock oxidize far to quickly" but the individuality of even "machine made factory pipes" make every review about that particular pipe.. it's not like tobacco where every tin should (hey I said should) taste the same.

I am more into smoking than pipes. My standards for selection are different from the collectors here. Like those loving cobs; it is all subjective.

We all seek knowledge. With pipes, I think determining your own path and standards are part of the attraction. I visited Viking Club Pipes over the weekend and picked up an estate. The site operator is quite knowledgeable and I'd say part of the cost was ameliorated by the knowledge shared.

A guy on this forum, MartinH (?), set up a pipe review site, maybe two years ago.
I never visited it, so I can't comment on it's quality or usefulness.
Personally, I assumed that it would not do me much good.
Although, I guess it could help to have a review when contemplating buying something from an obscure, or untested maker.

I believe forums are probably the best place for such information, as people buy newer (or estate) models of a pipe, a general idea can be had of brand, era made, material, workmanship, etc. It is much easier to do some searching through individual experiences and gauge what might work best for you than a generic "star rating" system from a product even more unpredictable and inconsistent than tobacoo--that being, pipes. All except perhaps Dunhill (even that is debated) have standards that are much more flexible considering the brair collected, what manager is on duty, fads of the time, etc.

Pipes really do need to be judged on individual merits, but the subjective bullsh...I mean, opinions, we as pipe smokers are naturally inclined toward, every pipe would end up with two out of five stars in a matter of weeks. :lol:

Not to bash Dunhill (aint that the start of every bash) They are susecptable to the same pressure and demand as everyone else.. They have undergrade and overgrade, bad batches, QC errors, hell LL even caught a fill in one.. big stink.. on both sides of the pond. I think the threads still around here somewhere.
