When I used to trout fish a lot standing in the creeks with hip boots I would smoke cheap drugstore cigars like Swisher Sweets or Hava-Tampa Sweet Tips and even Avanti anisette stogies. They kept the skeeters away and the flying gnats. My fishing and hunter buddy would just bring chew like Redman or Beechnut lol, he'd say, "those damn things stink man! Why not just use chew?" Is tell him that I wasn't doing it for the pleasure or nicotine, and that I wasn't getting bit up, but he was! LOL

I'd just be guessing, but if latakia works, then something else that is fire/smoke cured might, so Old Dark Fired (?). I've seen some dark fired leaves so highly fired that they were black and shiny. On another note, we have a mosquito plant, and it keeps them away fairly well, especially if you rub a leaf on your skin or clothing. Also, I can tell you that permethin sprayed on clothing works very well for mosquitoes and ticks. I work in tick areas sometimes, so it is a must.

I've tried every possible blend I could think of. Nothing seems to work on our mosquitos around here. Worse are the gnats. Pipe seems to attract them as they are always on me but not the wife. Little buggers.

Try AVANTI cigars Ranger. I'm telling ya those anisette stink bombs will keep any insect with wings within a 100 yards from you !!

Manitoba is infamous for its abundance and variety of mosquitos, we also have an abundance of common wood ticks. I'll second the effectiveness of permethrin impregnated clothing. My work hat is made of permethrin impregnated cloth and its serves as mosquito bane all summer, even through bi-weekly washes! This is my second, I bought one last year as well. I rarely use other repellent, instead I simply wear long sleeves to work, I cannot stand the feel of lotions/sprays on my skin and they collect dust and grime very quickly in my regular tasks. If mosquito populations are really high I will spray my work shirt and pants with aerosol DEET products, I never use anything below 35%.

Another great botanical repellent is common marigolds, I incorporate them in plantings around the course to improve the comfort of outdoor settings like our dining patio as well as for aesthetic purposes. Chrysanthemums are also effective.

I also smoke a pipe most of the time during peak mosquito season but I have never noticed that any specific tobacco type or blend is more effective. It should be noted that I smoke no strong aromatics and that may play a role one way or the other.

P. S.: I used to be able to purchase genuine Kentucky Cheroot cigars at the local Tobacconist, they were an excellent smoke for outdoor work. I used to call them "mosquito beaters". Toscano Classico cheroots are also good.
