Recently I acquired an estate E. Andrews pipe that smokes wonderfully except for a small problem...

Right behind the button there is a toot indentation that actually obstructs the airway and makes passing a pipe cleaner nearly impossible save for with a little finger muscle.

Suggestions on a fix? I'd like to hear from you pipe repairmen/makers or do-it-yourselfers. If worse comes to worse I will send it to a professional.

Dip that part of the stem, and that part only, in boiling water, and in about 2 minutes, it will go back to its old shape.

You will need to polish the stem after you do this. But that's the "first try" approach.

Thanks sasquatch! I was actually hoping to hear from you.

Let me ask you a question... do you do sandblasts?

Ditto that!

No blasts. :( Wish to hell I could but it's about 3000 bucks to get geared up to to it "properly". I may gear up to do it improperly though.

Meanwhile, if you want a pipe dragged behind my truck for a day or two, I could do that.

And if it doesn't go back to its old shape from the boiling, use something flat and strong like a fingernail file to slip into the bit slot and "encourage" it to press out, while it's still hot and flexible.

A good set of needle files are a handy thing to have around, for any sort of stem tweaking.

Thanks to some great american pipemakers, my stem has been fixed. The indentation is still visible, but it passes a cleaner test very well.

The stem did need to be polished again, which wasn't too hard.

all in all a wonderful and easy fix!
