Question for those who smoke indoors...

Have you any special technique of dealing with smoke alarms?

I got caught out recently by mine, and since then I'm currently just taking the batteries out, but obviously that has the minor drawback of offering an unscheduled crispy demise. I remember at university some of my friends used to cover smoke alarms with rugby socks, claiming it blocked what they were smoking, but I was always a little dubious. Anyone have any tips on stopping the little bleeders setting off on you?

Get a window fan and smoke near it with the window open. Works pretty well for me.

Hm. Thanks for the reply MisterE. Are you talking about a fan built into the window that extracts the air out, or a fan that blows across you to the window? I did try the latter but had mixed results.

How about for moving around in the house, if I didn't always want to smoke in one area. Is it either pipe or detector? I hadn't looked into it, but I was sure one of you would tell me something like 'there are new detectors that ignore tobacco smoke' That'd be nice!

Holy smokes! If I set off the smoke alarm, I'd be banished to the outdoors for sure.
My window fan does a pretty good job. You just have to be near it.
I only smoke in one room. At my desk with the TV and computer.

I mastered this problem a few years back when I had to stay in a no smoking room at a hotel, as there were no vacancies in smoking.

Cigars produce much more smoke than a pipe, and I found that the plastic liner from the ice bucket coupled with a rubber band was very effective. Any similar product should suffice.

Shane, I tried that technique, but some of the detectors give a constant beep when the batteries are low, or removed. Not sure how they are designed to do that, but the plastic bag trick ended up solving both problems.

I always preemptively put a ziploc bag around the smoke detector before my sister started to cook. Zipped so that it was still hanging up there by the cords. Most often we'd forget and just leave it there for a while to be honest. Worked wonders, as did Burger King after the cooking fiascos.

A normal box fan reversed to blow air out of the window has a drawing effect from the read (inside house) and will pull out smoke. (Another lesson learned courtesy of my sisters cooking)

Honestly, I never really had a problem with the detectors when smoking a pipe... Last Christmas a few friends were over and we had some cigars and didn't want to smoke outside so I yanked out the batteries and just never put them back... Safety first!

I always suspected smoke detectors were a ploy from the anti-tobacco set. :mrgreen: They probably wring their hands knowing they're doing the greater good for people who obviously don't know better.

(probably more true than not, in jest or not, now that I think about it... :scratch: )

There's probably a bevvy of federal laws broken by disabling an installed smoke detecting device.

I've got three alarms in my house, have smoked indoors since I moved in 18 years ago and have never had a problem with the alarms. I don't sit right below one and blow huge clouds of smoke directly at them which probably would set 'em off. I'm continually amazed at all the "problems" folks have in smoking

I don't set off any detectors here. Have them all over the place.

The only time I set one of mine off was when I lit up right beneath it. Other than that mine never go off and I smoke in the house all the time. I think you will be ok if you are not under it.
