It's called the Magic Stem, just push the stem in and unclog the draft hole. Which works flawlessly now. The restore took a few hours but the end result was well worth it. It's a real nice piece of briar with NO fills. After the fine sanding and staining the briar looks better then new thanks to White Diamond and pure carnauba wax, using my buffing wheels of course. The nomenclature is crisp!! Now the

silver band is now pristine as are the two silver stars inlayed in the stem. I think it looks great, what's your opinion?

It looks nice!

I have one of these but have never smoked it. Does it come apart? Mine was in a lot, and it is one of the ones that never made it to the rack.

Fr_Tom, I've smoked it twice, very satisfied.
However do not force the stem apart from the spring ( very small ) mechanism. Extremely difficult to realign if your not careful. It's a solid piece of briar, I will say that for sure. Light yours up one day and let me know what you think of your Davenport.

So it just gets a pipe cleaner and stays assembled with the plunging mechanism to clear the draft hole?

FWIW, mine is a Lee's MAGIC STE with a patent number. The final M maybe just did not stamp well. It is a lovat and weighs 40.5 g. Briar is nice but unremarkable with one small fill. It is a sitter. It says "Star Grain."

Fr_Tom, sounds like the pipe needs a good isopropyl cleaning. Does your pipe state Lord Davenport on one side? Yup, just run a pipe cleaner thru it, maybe a few with isopropyl then some dry ones. There were a few different models, does yours look similar to mine posted?

Ah, just re-read your post....yours is a Lee, looks similar to the Davenport. You have the Lee Lovat, nice pipe.

Just looked again at my Davenport, it states Amber Grain under Lord Davenport and on the other side just Magic Stem. During the 30's & 40's there were a few manufacturers that patented their version of a magic stem.

Yup, your ghost should fade after a few bowls of your favorite tobacco. That's why I dedicate certain pipes to each of my tobacco's.

Fr_Tom, good answer!!! Made me laugh.

If I smoke a Lat blend that pipe is dedicated to Lat blends. My pipe friend wonders why his Burley blends taste terrible, it's because he smokes
a blend with Latakia in it prior. In my books that's a NO NO!!
