Just curios if anyone has (or has any experience with) an S&R pipe from Pipes and Pleasures in Columbus, Ohio?

I'm in the southern part of the state, but Pipes & Pleasures is the nearest real pipe shop or tobacconist to me other than a Tinderbox which is also in Columbus.

I've sampled several of the house blends from there, and am stopping in there Friday to pick up some more to cure my latest TAD attack.

I've not seen or smoked one of their pipes though, and thought I would have a look while I'm in. Just wondered if anyone else has seen, smoked, or owned one?

Oh! www.pipesandpleasures.com

Cheers,

The old lady who makes them is nice. They look good. Other than that who knows.

Dunno, but there's a video on YouTube by them that offers a 20% discount on your first purchase. I think I entered "pipes & pleasures" or something to find it. The pipes on their site look OK to me.

Thanks Richard! Good find on the discount. That will come in handy even if I only end up buying tobacco this weekend!

Smoker's Haven is in Columbus as well, it's not close to me but I visited when I went to the Columbus pipe show and it was a fine shop if you have the time.

Pipes & Pleasures is one of the last of the old style tobacconists. Steve and Roswitha ran the shop for years, making and repairing pipes, and supplying a wide assortment of tobaccos. A few years back, I believe that they were in the process of trying to sell the shop in order to retire when Steve sadly passed. I visited the store in 1998 and have been purchasing tobacco on and off since then via phone calls and web orders. My sister purchases Christmas Cheer for me each year and Roswitha remembers her when she phones. Excellent in my opinion.

Pipeedia calls their pipes 'yard pipes'. I think that they are just good honest pipes that will smoke well for years to come. Take a look while you're there. If you see one you like, go for it.

I love S&R (Pipes and Pleasures).

You have to take a bit of care when you go there, if you don't know where it is, it can be easy to drive right past it! I can't say enough about the shop, though...smallish, but plenty of inventory. When I lived in the Columbus area, I made a point to visit several times a month and continue to place an occasional order with them online. I haven't been in the shop in two years or so, but I remember them always having a pretty decent selection of tins and a number of "house" blends as well.

I don't personally own a S&R pipe, but a good friend of mine who still lives in the area has several and he's told me that he's never had a bad smoke from any of them.

Like Doug said, it is one of those last lingering "old style" tobacco shops. You'll feel very welcome and will feel more like a valued customer and friend than a guy with a wallet.

I stopped in here for about 40 minutes on Friday.

I didn't have much time to look at or go through their pipe selection, but it was large.

I picked up three bags of their house blend tobacco (Golden Goodness, Sailor's Delight, and Euphoria), some random accessories (pipe tools, cleaners, tobacco pouches, etc).

I'd really like to make it back up when I have a whole afternoon to talk about and look at pipes.

My 2 cents: their pipes look ok. They do look a tad overpriced based on the photos, though.

I've been in the shop a couple of times and have talked to Roswitha at the Columbus show many times. I have a couple of her pipes and they are a good honest smokes. Pick one you like and give it a go.

Where are you in Ohio? The Wharf is a pretty good B&M in Beavercreek, Ohio on the fringe of the Fairfield mall. You can always find a game of dominoes or chess. The inventory is good and so is the house blends. I've been smoking one of their house blends for 15 yrs now (Sea Breeze). PM me and we can link up.

I bought my first S&R from Steve and Roswetha over 25 years ago and aquired 14 more over the next 10 years. I have over 45 older Dunhill's and Charatans (from the 1960's and Lane era) and have to say that my S&R's are really EQUAL to them in ALL aspects, especially smoking wise. There is not a day that I do not smoke one of my S&R's they are that good. I'm sure Roswetha ( I just learned about Steve's passing) still produces a GREAT pipe. I would recomend their pipes wholeheartedly

I have eleven S&R's and I joined this forum to say Hi to a member and post a reply to this thread specifically. The quality of their pipes... Top notch. With the advent of the availability via the internet, to more of the smaller carvers, it may be harder for them to stand out, but back in the day... Say 20 years or so, and they were the cream of the crop. Smaller Carvers back then were fewer and farther between. Randy Wiley was starting to make a name for himself, and a few others were breaking through to the mass market. S&R hit the niche correctly. They touched a nerve by working with the smaller Tobacconist Shops, doing meet and greets, and pressing the flesh with their Customer Base. Today when you look at their site, you see some select high grades for sale, but 20 years ago they offered a FANTASTIC amount of quality, for very little money. You could spend $40 and get one hell of a pipe. I had a Blue Pot Shape that was a fantastic smoke. Yeas; I said Blue. As Blue as Pappa Smurf Himself. I abused the heck out of that pipe and it never let me down. I mourned it's loss greatly. When I was younger, I was a holy terror on my pipes. I showed them very little respect or consideration. I recently collected 11 S&R's from the collection of a friend, and I specifically bought all that he had, passing over Dunhills, Comoys, Savinellis, Jaques, GBD's, Charatans and Loewe's. That is the regard I have for S&R's. I was lucky to fall into 11 beauties, of such high quality you wouldn't believe. I am sure that if you run across some of their older pipes, you will see what I am talking about. There is your problem though; those that have them do NOT let them go. Good luck to you in finding one, and if you happen to have one... Bravo to you and Enjoy!
