Aside from being a dark and rich flake from the house of Sam Gawith, I don't find it very comparable to St. James. Where St. James has some fruity tones to it and some very apparent spice from the perique, BBF is more sweet and has more yeasty tones. Its a stoved virginia through and through.
Certainly it compares to FVF although while FVF is so dark that its almost black, BBF is just that, brown. Its also a lot easier to deal with although I highly recommend rubbing out and allowing it to sit in the open for at least an hour to bring to a workable moisture level. If you don't you will get a mouthful of steam. At least I do. Having just smoked a bowl about 20 minutes ago I found the first half of the bowl exploding with flavor, sweet and basically tasting the way it smells in the jar. Get past that second half and it develops into a much richer and darker flavor. When its all over you are left with a taste in your mouth that is a virginia lovers dream: sweet, yeasty, earthy tobacco heaven.
BBF needs to be sipped in order to enjoy it to the fullest. If you rush it or you smoke it in a distracted state you'll miss much of what it has to offer.
Enjoy your tins.
