I regularly smoke Ft James Flake, Full VA Flake and Cabbie's Mixture.

I recently bought a few tins of Best Brown flake without ever having smoked any. If one can compare it to the other three mentioned, could you please and give me a hint of what I'm in for?

Aside from being a dark and rich flake from the house of Sam Gawith, I don't find it very comparable to St. James. Where St. James has some fruity tones to it and some very apparent spice from the perique, BBF is more sweet and has more yeasty tones. Its a stoved virginia through and through.
Certainly it compares to FVF although while FVF is so dark that its almost black, BBF is just that, brown. Its also a lot easier to deal with although I highly recommend rubbing out and allowing it to sit in the open for at least an hour to bring to a workable moisture level. If you don't you will get a mouthful of steam. At least I do. Having just smoked a bowl about 20 minutes ago I found the first half of the bowl exploding with flavor, sweet and basically tasting the way it smells in the jar. Get past that second half and it develops into a much richer and darker flavor. When its all over you are left with a taste in your mouth that is a virginia lovers dream: sweet, yeasty, earthy tobacco heaven.
BBF needs to be sipped in order to enjoy it to the fullest. If you rush it or you smoke it in a distracted state you'll miss much of what it has to offer.
Enjoy your tins.

BBF is a fuller version of FVF. Get some. You won't regret it.
Shouldn't that be the other way around, E?

Yea BBF is FVF's little bro.
Quite right m'Lord. My understanding is that BBF is made of the same stuff a FVF, but receives less time in the press. Consequently it's a bit lighter in all aspects.

Yet I find it more to my liking than FVF for a variety of reasons, much as I enjoy FVF. To wit-

It seems easier to dry down, prepare, and pack. FVF can be rather a bugger sometimes (actually most times). Plus I find it's more to my palate - mellow, easy going, sweetish without being overty sweet, and has kind of an "autumn leaves" thing going on if you take my meaning.

Thoroughly relaxing, and I do prefer it in a Pete which seems to enhance the "nutty" thing. Or I could be totally off the old rocker....your choice!

:bom:

Thanks to all! I've got a brand new Iafisco Lovat just waiting to have its bowl filled with Best Brown for its initiation into my early morning after-breakfast smoke ritual.

Speaking of Samuel G, earlier today I signed up as an online customer/client of GQ Tobaccos based in the UK just so I could order a rope of Cabbies Uncut! I'll see how it compares to my beloved Cabbies Mixture. Probably after all is said and done there will be no discernible difference, but it will at least be a bit of fun. It's at least GOT to be better than their Black XX Finest Kendal Twist!!

S13 - when you place your next order at GQ you should pick up some Gawith Brown Pigtail (Sweet Rum or the ES). It is arguably the best of any Gawith spun tobacco.
