I had an ad out that I was looking to buy tobacco pipes in any condition, a fella answered my ad and said he had some pipes that were his grandfathers, he sent me these pics of the pipes. I told him I was interested and asked what he wanted for them, he told me to make an offer which I don't want to do from the poor pictures he sent me , so we tried to arrange a meeting but found out that we were 2hrs apart from each other and didn't think it would be worth either of our time to drive that far, because it is so hard to tell what kind of condition the pipes are actually in,due to the poor pictures, so he asked me to make an offer anyways, so I said well with out seeing them I would only feel comfortable offering about 5 bucks a pipe, but I admitted they may be worth more... he said I have a better offer, thinking some one else may have also been interested in them out of curiosity I asked him what the offer was, and he said, if you recondition one of these pipes and give it back to me, you can keep the rest of them, and that he was just happy some one wanted to use them, cause he didn't think anyone smoked them anymore...LOL
so he is shipping them to me next week

Mostly GBD and a couple of kaywoodies the pipe he wants back is the one with out the box.
I think after I see them in person and can do a proper evaluation, when he gets his pipe back, there might be a little more with them to thank him

Well, If the one GBD that I can see the inside of the bowl is any indication how the others are smoked I think you were wise not to offer. The one pipe he wants restored for the lot doesn't look as bad so you may break even. Lets hope for no burn outs.
BTW, your luckier then I when running an ad I reckon. Anytime I've done it I get people with $5 beat up Grabow's wanting $50 for them. LOL!

Yeah I am anxious to see inside that bowl as well, I can't tell if it is all burned out or if it is a crusty ring from sitting in a box collecting moisture, I think it is the latter, if thats the case the retort will clean out the stem, shank and bowl, I am just hoping no burn outs, cracks, or gnawed bits

Oh not what I thought you meant. I thought Fatman was back in the BoB vicinity.

Looks like with a little elbow grease & time you should come out with a pretty good deal BC. Congrats

Those pipes are covered in mold and mildew. I have seen collections kept in humid basement environments that ended up like that. It's a shame to see that, but many folks just think old pipes aren't worth keeping anyway.

Naw! That's just Plume Doc. LOL!

Here is a little update The two Kaywoodies are not done, the Meerschaum one I need to recondition the bowl ( not much work on a meer) and the other bulldog kaywoodie is actually meer lined, but the top of the meer lining looks like it is broken but I have not even touched that pipe yet here are a couple shots of the the three pipes I have finished, the other one is reconditioned and getting sent back to him , I didn't take pics of it

out of all of these pipes only two were actually GBD's and only one has the box it is supposed to be in, the other boxes are mismatched. The stems on everyone of these pipes look brand new , he must not have been a clencher, or was very gentle, all of these pipes had an incredible amount of Cake on them that even was on top of the rims

1st up from what I can tell by the stamping and what I believe to have read about dating is a 1955 to 1965 Castello Sea Rock

The cake was so bad on this pipe that the head of a pipe nail wouldn't fit down the chamber, I don't believe he ever ran a pipe cleaner through the stem as I couldn't get a standard cleaner down through it I had to use my tapered drill bit to ream out the stem.

The GBD Apple: This pipe was equally caked up but the stem wasn't as bad this pipe has the original sock the original box with the date he received the pipe written on the box, under the sock in the box was the Christmas tag that has his grandchildrens names on it who gave it to him the date is 1973
The cake didn't wan't to come off the rim of this pipe and I didn't want to damage it so I left on what I couldn't get off. any one know any good tricks to remove it with out damage, I am all ears

This billiard looks well used and a little beat up, not to bad tho I don't think mostly the rim , I figured it was either one of the older ones, or maybe one he liked and smoked more than the others, maybe a good smoker eh?

Thought some of you may like to see them up close.

Thanks for looking!

Thank you! I havent smoked any of them yet, kinda like how they look now!

They all look GREAT! Harry, nice score on the Castello!
I've had some come by me that had the same cake build up and I just soaked them well with spit and chipped and or scrapped it off with my thumb nail (I got a fairly large nail) and just kept at it with spit and a Q-tip till it was all gone. Water doesn't have the same properties as spit and see'en I got my fair share of it I use it.

Qoute: (Thank you! I havent smoked any of them yet, kinda like how they look now!)
Now ya know how I feel every time I restore a pipe.  :D

Some spit, a rag and elbow grease should get that heavy cake off the New Era pipe, take your time.
You could also lift some of the bowl top dents on the billiard with a butter knife heated with a torch and a wet rag (steam lifts them out quite nicely).

Thanks Fellas, Knowing the History of these pipes it almost feels like they were my grand fathers pipes!
I am honored to have them as part of my collection!

Thanks for the tips Riff Raff!

Really nice vintage briars that are now resurrected for another lifetime of enjoyment. Well done.
